Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This story is about Emma and Ryan and the situations that normally come up when young kids play together. Emma and Ryan have disagreements over what to play and when Ryan grabs a special toy, Emma reacts with tears and anger. Luckily, Emma's mom does not overreact and encourages the children to come up with solutions themselves by prompting the Emma with questions on how the other Ryan might feel and what else can be done . Ryan did not understand how special the toy was to Emma and when Emma understands how her reaction affected Ryan, she offers him a different toy to play with. Mom still offers encouragement and praise along the way as Emma and Ryan play. When Ryan becomes upset that it is time to leave, Emma asks if he would like to take home the toy until the next time that they play together. This book discourages tantrums and meltdowns and demonstrates how parents can still be involved without taking over. Parents tend to offer solutions and rescue children from conflict, not allowing them to come up with the solutions themselves. Teaching emotional intelligence offers better results. This title is encouraging to parents as well and repeated use over time will help both parents and children. There are extra pages at the end of the book that explain that the different-colored text on most pages symbolizes examples of ways that parents can either validate feelings or examples of encouragement, or offering choices. Read this book to learn and share using simple text, familiar situations and kid-friendly illustrations. This is a great book for preschools and public libraries, but best of all for use at home. Meet the Author

Stacey R. Kaye, MMR, is the mother of two young children and a self-described “Parenting Lecture Groupie.” As her first daughter grew into a feisty toddler, Stacey searched for a language she could use to discourage tantrums and meltdowns while at the same time encouraging her daughter to explore, gain confidence, and build emotional intelligence. Dozens of parenting tomes, lectures, and courses provided great theory, but not the language. That’s when Stacey began writing ParentSmart/KidHappy books.
