Subtitled "How to Best Prepare Your Child for School," this book explains that spending as little as fifteen minutes a day with your preschooler can prepare him/her for dealing successfully with those first few years of learning to read and do math in school. The book is basically a compilation of games and activities written in a sequential manner to use with a child who, as the author suggests, is four years old. The author, a former teacher, encourages the use of positive reinforcement and hugging to get a child interested in spending this time each day. She cautions that there will be days when fifteen minutes is too much or perhaps, best postponed until tomorrow. There are many fun activities, and charting the child's progress is encouraged as reinforcement. The activities are ones that parents used to do with children but seem to have been lost as educational responsibilities have passed to caregivers and teachers. While the author does suggest reading to your child, most of the activities are isolated reading and math skill activities. Simply reading fifteen minutes to your child daily using quality literature would generally accomplish the same goals as you read and discuss a book's content. However, for those parents who are skill oriented, this book is a good resource. Meet the Author

Teresa Savage is an Associate Dean at the College of Communications, University of Illinois-Urbana. She has served as a project consultant to Walt Disney's Buena Vista Home Video, the U.S. Standards on English/Language Arts, and Head Start. A former teacher, she is a published poet and fiction writer. She co-founded Softchalk Learning Systems, Inc., a technology company devoted to the education of young children. She has two children whom she taught to read and count at home as preschoolers. Teresa Savage lives in Urbana, Illinois.
