Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
From Atlantic to Pacific, girls should fall for these autumn releases. With advice for mind, body and spirit, Real Beauty: 101 Ways to Feel Great About You by Therese Kauchak, illus. by Carol Yoshizumi, counters the body and health ideals set forth by the media and pop culture. Tips (which include several "Big Truths") range from "watch your serving sizes the next time you eat out" to "recognize stereotypes for what they are-uninformed judgements." Can the company that produces expensive dolls also produce a decent book? Yes, as it turns out, they can. With bright color pages and lots of photos depicting a diverse group of girls living life healthfully, this book does not disappoint. Healthy eating, mood management, and fostering a positive mental attitude are some issues addressed. The tone of the book is definitely light and upbeat, without slipping into Pollyanna territory. Several pages provide the reader an opportunity to write a mini-journal entry: list your "cheer squad," list five things you are good at, a quiz from girlpower.gov. Personal anecdotes are sprinkled throughout; stories about how to handle teasing, what's "normal," and self-acceptance are a few. Boosting self-esteem is always a popular concern for teenage and pre-teen girls, but this short guide provides more than just a boost—here are practical tips for feeling your best and doing your best every day. 2004, American Girl, Ages 9 to 12.

Very encouraging for girls learning how to make healthy choices and to love themselves!

This book is Terrific for girls learning how to be the best they can be and to love who they are!! We bought this for my daughter when she was ten years old. She's a very big reader but has often has a hard time verbally expressing when things are bothering her. This book is one of several American Girl books that I see her using as a reference to guide her decisions when she is trying to work through problems. Sometimes messages are "heard" more clearly when they come from someone other than "Mom"! This book is very upbeat and offers many ideas and suggestions for eating right (and why), appreciating one's own unique characteristics and talents, decision making, handling emotions, keeping physically active, and creating many healthy habits as well as coping strategies. This is a great book for anyone entering middle-school years.

This book is helpful to girls in so many ways.First it talks about how you can be prepared if your period comes. Also how to handle anger i a nice peaceful way. Also helps you to feel good about your self in a postive way insteed of telling other people your better then them. And saying your ugly just so your friends can tell you your pretty. Its better to know your beatiful just the way you are on the outside and inside.

    a reviewer

This book is very encouraging, helpful, supportive, and useful. It's a wonderful reference book. I've used, like, about half the 101 suggestions in this book. It's a fun experience because it's so colorful and the graphics and design inside the book is good. They keep you interested.
