Overview

The culmination of Brad Steiger’s 50 years of paranormal research, this book is a bold telling of true ghost stories and first-person encounters with the super natural. Arranged topically, it covers every sort of ghost and haunting: poltergeists, shadow beings, and phantoms alongside haunted apartments, hotels, and trains. From ghosts that still haunt Ohio’s State Reformatory, otherwise known as Shawshank, to Abe Lincoln’s regular consultation with mediums, this compendium delves into the true scary stories from both historical documents and personal accounts. In its 30 chapters, spirits represented include the good (“Ghosts that Saved Lives”), the bad (“Invisible Home Wreckers”), and the ugly (“Demonic Spirits That Whisper Commands to Kill”). The book goes on to unearth the ghastly goings-on and macabre manifestations at haunted places such as museums, churches, graveyards, restaurants, and sacred sites while also instructing how to perform a cleansing ritual to rid a home of unwanted spectral visitors. This second edition is updated to include new stories and compelling evidence of the both the existence of ghosts and proof of hauntings that will entertain, induce chills, and make the doubtful believe.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This excellent collection of ghost encounters will both warm the heart and scare you out of your wits. Steiger (The Source: Journey Through the Unexplained) has been a psychical researcher for nearly 50 years and appears regularly on television and radio programs. This is a collection of his personal accounts as well as his associates' experiences and stories collected from credible web sites for paranormal researchers. While the experiences make for interesting reading, the sheer number may become daunting if read straight through. Readers who enjoy books by John Edward (Hello from Heaven) or James Van Praagh (Talking to Heaven) will enjoy the feel-good selections in the chapter on ghosts that bid farewell, while spooky-movie fans will enjoy the haunted house tales. Excellent appendixes list haunted places in North America, ghost hunters to contact, and a filmography of the best Hollywood movies in the genre. Photographs throughout enhance the appeal. Good for any collection where the paranormal is popular, this is also an outstanding choice for those who like short stories and possibly for those hard-to-choose-for teens.-Jennifer Kuncken, Williamsburg Regional Lib., VA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Interesting Stories That Don't Border On Hokey

I absolutely enjoyed this book. What I really liked about this one was that it mainly relied on factual evidence to create chills rather than dramaticizing small events that could easily be explained away. I also liked the fact that each chapter was clearly sectioned off into categories so if I didn't really want to read about possessions and wanted to skip right to animal hauntings I could do so easily. The storytelling is solid and I found myself reading certain stories over and over again to friends and family. It actually told the accurate story better than any other book I've ever read on the subject. Usually I don't get the same kind of fear reading a book than I do watching a TV show but some of the stories, along with some well placed photos, made me actually want to keep the light on at night.

Steigers' ghost hunting not for the faint hearted

Brad Steiger's nearly four decades of serious research into ghostly phenomena - both personally and collecting others' experiences - proves that such events occur to everyone: from the everyday man to royalty. Incidences will happen anywhere, too, from the happy home to legendary hotels. But Steiger also aptly warns that 'ghost hunting' is not the stuff the entertainment media passes it off as; instead, it can be a dangerous and even deadly undertaking. The photographs, some a century old, only bolster the reality of life here and beyond. So turn off your TV, and experience what can really happen - and has happened to others - in this career magnum opus.

    The One to Read

This book is a must have for anyone who has an interest in the unseen world. It is the result of a life time collecting stories from all over the world of people who have had experience with other worldly beings. The stories are all true and in many cases documented to a degree that rules out any chance of fantasy or fiction. All that is left is the clear reality; these things are real!
