Overview

(Limelight). Born out of the necessity Pannell recognized during her years of teaching theatre to young people in community centers and public and arts schools, here at last is a collection of monologues and scenes that today's inner-city kids can relate to. Both literally and figuratively, these brief dramatic works speak the language of contemporary pre-teens and teens (ages 8-18), bringing to light the reality of their city lives. Not only for theater instructors and their students, REAL will be useful to counselors, group leaders, teachers working with urban youth and anyone searching for a means of involving young people in discussions important to their lives.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4 Up-These 21 brief pieces feature one to four characters from the ages of 8 through 18. Issues such as drugs, sex, violence, pregnancy, sexual abuse, homosexuality, incest, death, and suicide are recognized, but not addressed or discussed. The scenes go nowhere, end abruptly, and have minimal direction and almost no background to set them up. Neither actors nor audience will be able to invest in these people because there is no character development; the pieces are highly stereotypical and simplistic. The dialogue is bland and unnatural, in spite of the heavy use of street language. These scenes might have some use in group counseling sessions to bring up issues for discussion. For acting classes or forensic competition, try Craig Slaight's Multicultural Monologues for Young Actors and Multicultural Scenes for Young Actors (both Smith & Kraus, 1995).-Susan Oliver, Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library System, FL Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
