Overview

Thinking about voting for McCain? Read this book. Cliff Schecter's hard-hitting profile explores the gap between the public record of Senator John McCain and his media image. Drawing on a range of sources and adding his unique perspective and humor, Schecter guides the reader though McCain's long history of expedient flip-flops, especially on his signature issues of national security and campaign finance reform. Far from a straight-talking maverick, McCain emerges as a temperamental political chameleon who will do or say virtually anything to become president of the United States. On issue after issue - including the invasion and occupation of Iraq, torture, abortion, and gay rights - The Real McCain reveals a politician who started as a Goldwater Republican, experienced a brief period after sanity after his loss to George W. Bush in 2000, and began pandering to the very groups he challenged after deciding to run again in 2008.

    Flip-flopping McCain V. The 'Maverick'

if this man is elected president, all we'll have is another bush presidency for another four years. and now with palin, second in command.... the neo-conservative agenda will completely come into fruition.

    Terrible!

John McCain is a good honest man and is fit to be president. This is the worst book ever.

    Talk About Smear!

This blatant political hack job is not worth the money or time to read it. It is full of slanted opinion and is not always factually correct. For example, Schecter calls Max Cleland a war hero in describing John Kerry's 'swiftboating.' Cleland was not wounded in action but by an accident. That does not make one a hero in my book. Nor does Kerry's dubious war record. Those who questioned Kerry's behavior and integrity during and after the Vietnam War had every right to do so. The left is always trying to squelch free speech. Schetcher handily mentions all of John McCain's perceived short comings 'including how he 'broke' under torture and about Cindy McCain's problems with self medication', but makes it sound as though he does not want to emphasize them. Oh, but he does! Come on, at least be honest with what you really think about John McCain, and don't sucker punch your readers. But oh, if those shortcomings had happened to someone on the left, (doubtful that any of them would find themselves in the precarious spot of being submerged in human waste while a POW) they would be heartily excused and lauded. The book is poorly written and researched. Save your money. Read the Huffington Post and you will get the same 'facts' over and over and over ad nauseum.

    Fools Rush In

This book is a poorly researched diatribe apparently intended to jettison the Republican contender for the Presidency. I¿m no fan of John McCain, but I have far less regard for authors who attempt to do a hatchet job on anyone just because they can.

    A reviewer

In a fairly well-researched book, Mr. Schecter raises a lot of interesting facts (some not quite so easily proven, however). The book is a fairly quick read and contains somewhat contentious information in places, but is overall an impressive overview of Senator McCain's obvious flip-flopping on various issues and his issues with 'pork' and 'earmarks' in Washington.
