Publishers WeeklyThis audiobook can best be summarized as such: "I did this drug, under these conditions. It had this effect on me. I reached this profound thought. Repeat." Pinchbeck explores the many different mind-altering substances utilized by spiritual leaders around the world to understand their effect and to ponder their role in the world today, where manufactured drugs don't have nearly as ethereal effect. Unfortunately, Pincheck spends a bit too much lip service self-promoting his previous books. Like many other Sounds True readers, Pincheck's light and gentle voice provides a soothing and intimate presence. He keeps a moderate pace of reading with a good voice for inflection. In other narrations, Pincheck's mispronunciations, audible breathing and other superfluous noises would seem interruptive and poorly performed. Yet, given the topics discussed and the mood of the production, they magnify the humanity of the narrator, creating a strong bond between speaker and listener.
