Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this fourth book in the series "Pendragon: Journal of an Adventure through Time and Space" Bobby Pendragon must save people in the territory of Veelox from what seems to them like a perfect world. There everyone can and does escape into an electronically-induced dream state where they live out all their best fantasies. Sounds good, but the fantasy world becomes so addictive, people refuse to leave it. The homes and businesses of Veelox are deserted. As if that weren't enough, St. Dane, the ultimate villain who seeks to destroy all humanity, twists a Reality Bug that has invaded the system so that ideal dreams become terrifying nightmares. The awful dreams will not stop unless Bobby and his few allies learn the origin code and defeat St. Dane, who has many tricks to confound them. Bobby is a 14-year-old who was leading an average teenage life on Second Earth until he learns he is destined to be a Traveler, one of just a few people with the power to travel through time and space to save the territories from St. Dane. Each book in the series includes the action-packed journal Bobby sends back to his two friends at home, along with what the friends are doing on Second Earth to help him. These fast-paced, highly visual books are the first novels of Mr. MacHale began his career as writer, director, executive producer and creator of several popular television series, specials and movies. He plans ten books in the Pendragon series. 2003, Aladdin Paperbacks/Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing Division, Ages 9 to 12.

Chapter One: Second Earth

Bobby Pendragon slipped the heavy ring onto his finger, where it belonged. But no sooner was it back in place when surprisingly, it began to twitch.

"What's the matter?" Mark Dimond asked.

"It...it's activating," Bobby said with surprise.

"Really? You mean there's a gate around here?" Courtney Chetwynde asked.

The gray stone in the center of the ring began to glow, then sparkle. A second later a sharp beam of light shot from its center. With a flash, the light blossomed into an image that hovered in front of the group.

Mark and Courtney took a surprised step backward. Gunny Van Dyke stepped protectively in front of them. But Bobby held his ground. Of the four of them standing on the empty lot at 2 Linden Place, Second Earth, Bobby was the only one who had seen this particular phenomenon before.

Floating before them was the image of a girl. Actually, it was a girl's head. Just a head. It was bigger than life, but definitely a girl. She had blond hair pulled back in a ponytail and wore small, yellow-tinted glasses.

"Whoa," said Courtney in awe.

"Yeah, whoa," added Mark.

"Aja Killian," whispered Bobby.

"Who?" Gunny asked.

"The Traveler from Veelox."

"Where have you been?" the floating head demanded angrily. "I've been trying to contact you for ages!"

"Long story," Bobby answered.

"I don't want to hear it, Pendragon," Aja's head shot back. "You'd better get back to Veelox."

"Why?" Bobby asked.

Aja-head hesitated. She looked nervous. Or at least as nervous as a 3-D floating head could look. "I'm not saying I made a mistake," she explained with a touch of embarrassment. "This may be a total false alarm, but -- "

"Just say it!" Bobby shouted.

"All right!" Aja snapped. "Saint Dane may have slipped through my security system. He is here on Veelox."

Bobby smiled and asked teasingly, "You're telling me your perfect security system isn't all that perfect?"

"Are you coming or not?" Aja demanded. She didn't like being challenged.

"On my way," Bobby answered.

"Don't take your time," Aja said snottily. Then the image vanished. The beam of light shot back into the ring and all was normal.

"Well," said Courtney with a sigh. "That was...strange."

"I guess I'm going to Veelox," Bobby said. Then looked to Gunny and asked, "Want to come?"

"Wouldn't miss it," Gunny answered with a smile.

Bobby turned to face Mark and Courtney. "This has been the best week of my life," he said sincerely.

The three friends had just spent an excellent week together, forgetting for a short while that Bobby Pendragon was a Traveler who shot across the universe, protecting Halla from an evil demon. Mark was nearly in tears. Courtney wasn't far behind. She walked up to Bobby and before he realized what was happening, she grabbed him and planted a serious kiss on his lips. Bobby didn't fight it. Once the shock was over, he wrapped his arms around Courtney and held her close.

Mark and Gunny turned away.

"So?" Gunny asked Mark. "How 'bout them Yankees?"

When Courtney and Bobby finally unlocked lips, Bobby's eyes were a little watery. But Courtney's gaze was razor sharp.

"Let's not wait another year before the next one, okay?" she said.

"Uh...sure. Sounds good," Bobby replied, trying to keep his knees from buckling.

Mark looked at Bobby, his best friend, and said, "Remember what we talked about, okay?"

"I promise," Bobby answered sincerely.

Bobby and Gunny walked toward the street and the limousine that was waiting to take them to the Bronx, and the flume.

"How are you feeling, shorty?" Gunny asked. "I mean...where is your head you know, with things?"

"I feel like Saint Dane got the better of me on First Earth," he answered thoughtfully. He then locked eyes with Gunny and said with total confidence, "And I'm not gonna let it happen again."

Gunny chuckled.

"What's so funny?" Bobby asked.

"Shorty, you're starting to sound just like your uncle Press."

Bobby smiled. He liked that. The two got into the back of the big car, the driver gunned the engine, and they were on their way.

Mark and Courtney watched as the black limo picked up speed with Bobby's hand still out the window, waving good-bye.

"What was it you guys talked about?" Courtney asked Mark.

"All sorts of things," he said with a sly smile. "But I'll tell you one thing: I'll bet we're going to see Bobby Pendragon again, a lot sooner than you think."

They took a last look at the departing limousine and saw Bobby pull his arm back inside. The car turned onto the main road and disappeared.

The people are fading fast, and Bobby depends solely on his past traveler friends, the traveler from Veelox, and his knowledge of siant dane's style to overcome the ever-growing problem, but will it be enough? Find out in thin incredible 4th installment in the fabulous Pendragon series. I started this book the same day i finished it, and i think i stopped once. WARNING:this book is impossible to put down

    Highly Recommended- A Great Read

Pendragon is a must-read series. It is packed with adventurous tales. As a twelve- year- old, I really enjoyed this book specifically. It keep me in suspense and high on my toes.

    Not my favorite...

This time, Pendragon goes to Veelox, a technology dominated world where people escape reality. Saint Dane is up to something, and Bobby and his new, snobby new friend have to figure it out. I think that in this installment, it takes forever to get right to the point, and the suspense doesn't deliver as the last three have. You do have to read all the books in the series, but this one is just a tad over done, but I'm still recommending it for the developing story.

A four because evil wins...and I had to write this for school.

Pendragon: The Reality Bug was a very enjoyable read. Bobby is after Saint Dane after their last encounter and discovers he is trying to destroy Veelox. Aja the only traveler from Veelox has created a virus she calls the Reality Bug to destroy Lifelight. When she plants the virus, she finds that Saint Dane has modified it and made it dangerous and the people who are using Life Light are in danger. Bobby and Aja who get help from Mark, Courtney, and the creator of Life Light itself, are trying to stop the virus that is killing the jumpers and threatening the territory of Veelox itself. Bobby is the only traveler from the territory we know as Second Earth. He sort of has become the leader of the travelers and is always after Saint Dane who is trying to destroy all the territories and Halla. Aja is the traveler from Veelox and she created the Reality Bug. Although she has a short temper and is very stoical, she does befriend Bobby, eventually. Saint Dane is your average bad guy times a million. He tries to destroy Halla 'everything¿literally' and the territory of Veelox. He has always hated Bobby and even his uncle before him. ¿It¿s the whole territory, Pendragon,¿ she said. ¿Reality on Veelox only exists to support the fantasy.¿ She then looked right at me. ¿That¿s why Saint Dane thinks he¿s won. This territory is about to fall apart, and we have nobody to blame but ourselves.¿ Lifelight is like reality except better. You live in your own fantasy world for as long as you want. You can be whomever you want, whenever you want. People on the territory of Veelox are all obsessed with Lifelight. They have deserted Rubic City and all went to live in their own dream world. ¿That¿s why Saint Dane thinks he¿s won.¿ Saint Dane has succeeded in making Veelox miserable and lonely. Bobby and Aja have to destroy the wonderful Lifelight to bring everyone back to reality. And Aja and Bobby have to save it before ¿this territory is about to fall apart.¿ I agree with many points in this book. People shouldn¿t live in a dream world where everything is perfect. Reality shouldn¿t exist to support the fantasy. I don¿t think there were any serious errors with this book. The author could have made Mark and Courtney¿s part in the book bigger especially since they are Bobby¿s best friends. Were there any new and unusual ideas? This entire book is new and unusual, and that¿s why it was such an interesting read. It was great to fall into a little fantasy world myself when I read this book. How is this book related to reality? Well some of the characters have a rather familiar attitude towards danger and adventure. It doesn¿t relate to my life because I¿m not a traveler, unfortunately, but I loved how the author really introduced the reality in fiction.

    Great!!!

I love how Saint Dane got his first territory. It seemed like all the other books were building up to a defeat, but I didn't expect it to be this one. Especially after everything seemed perfect when Bobby arrived on Veelox. I love how it crumbled on the last page!!! Must read!!! I LOVE PENDRAGON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Ummm...

Okay, I LOVE this series! I love books, period, so my list of 'favorites' is pretty jam-packed. This is way up there. The one and only reason I gave this a four is becaouse evil wins. How wack is that?? I mean, all that for nothing? What's the point of writing it if Saint Dane wins? Don't for a moment think i disliked this book! It was awesome! I just have a few questions, like: Why is Bobby such a jerk when he comes back to Second Earth? Oh, and here's a huge one: What the *alarm clock goes off* happened to Gunny?? This book is amazing, although Dane winning kinda makes me think, like, whaa...? Still love these books though!

    Suprising ending

This book was so good! I have to say it beats out the Harry Potter series. I couldn't believe Saint Dane got his first territory. Also the ending makes you want to jump right to the next one. I can't wait!!!

    PENDRAGON IS THE BEST EVER!!!

this one was an awesome book. However, i'd say that i kinda missed spader. his absence altered the mood of the series. veelox is a fantasy-based world where reality is greatly ignored. Saint Dane takes advantage of this. This book was sooooo good. keep it up MacHale!

    The best Pendragon book yet!

Wow!! Out of all the Pendragon books I've read, this one is my most favorite. Usually I have a pretty good idea of what is going to happen, but in this one I didn't have a clue. There is non-stop action and adventure in this book. It WILL keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat!! I highly recommend reading this one of a kind book!
