Editorial Reviews

VOYA, June 2014 (Vol. 37, No. 2) - Suzanne Osman
The “At Issue: Social Issues” series is an excellent initiation into a variety of relevant and compelling popular issues. Each volume begins with a brief introduction to the subject peppered with reasonably current statistics, quotes from experts in the field, and the mention of pertinent research and writings on the issue. A compilation of various articles from several academic and popular sources comprises the bulk of each edition. The editors provide articles of opposing viewpoints to demonstrate the complexity of each issue. For example, in the volume entitled Has Child Behavior Worsened?, one chapter conveys the perspective that “Millenials Are More ‘Generation Me’ Than ‘Generation We’”, but another holds the belief that “Teens Are More Civic-Minded Now Than in the Past.” One chapter of the volume entitled Reality Tv opines that “Reality TV Helps Bring Diversity to Television,” but the next expresses the opinion that “Reality TV Stereotypes Minority Groups.” Each volume ends with an annotated list of organizations to contact for more information on the subject; a bibliography of books, periodicals and internet sources; and an index. The writing is highly accessible, attention-grabbing, and amply documented. The only disappointment is that the editors chose not to include any visual documentation (charts, graphs, or photographs). Regardless of this oversight, this is an important series to consider for purchase; it is superb curricular material for teaching students about controversial topics, point of view, and how different studies often bear conflicting results. (At Issue: Social Issues) Reviewer: Suzanne Osman; Ages 11 to 18.
