Children's Literature - Paula Rohrlick
This spooky hi-lo tale is about video gaming. Teenaged Curtis loves to battle it out online, using his favorite avatar, Hurricane. He's intrigued by a champion gamer named Khyber Kingsley, who has mysteriously gone missing, but his friend Junior only cares about going to a party where all the popular kids will be that evening. The party is to take place at a gaming club, so Curtis finally agrees to go. But when the two arrive, the building looks abandoned. They enter anyway, only to discover a computer that suddenly glows to life, bearing the message: "If you can read this, it's already too late." Curtis and Junior are trapped, and the only way out is to accept a mysterious man's challenge to play him online in a new, full-immersion game called "Realm of Ghosts." Reluctant or challenged readers, as well as ESL students, will appreciate the book's high-interest topic and sinister atmosphere as well as its brevity. End material includes "case files" and a glossary, along with discussion questions and writing prompts. Reviewer: Paula Rohrlick
