Overview

Ethan Reaper is lucky at work but unlucky at love. He has particular tastes in the bedroom and can't find a woman to satisfy him. A new job for his security firm puts him in the middle of the Caribbean in a fantasy resort where anything goes. But the woman who steals her way under his guard is more than she appears.

Jewel Marciella—Jewel Riser—has no idea of what her undercover assignment at Satyr's Myst, an exclusive and very private resort, will entail. Her attraction to Ethan is her first surprise, her job as a sexual slave her second whopping shocker.

Ethan and Jewel each have a job to do, and despite the hot chemistry between them, their relationship on the island is a fantasy at best. But murder and blackmail put them in dangerous positions, and they'll have to decide if love is indeed a fantasy…or a choice which reaps its own rewards.

I've read several of Marie's works and have fell in love with not only her writing, but the stories she tells. They're emotionally satisfying and she always knows how to deliver the heat! I've read and highly enjoyed several of Marie's books including Tied and True, Working Out, Closing the Deal, Enjoying the Show and Bodywork. Unfortunately, sometimes even an author who you love to read can have a book that is a miss instead of a hit and Reaper's Reward was that book for me.

My problem most of all with this story was that I couldn't connect with the character and when that happens, it ruins the whole story which was the case for me with Reaper's Reward. I didn't get anything from the characters other than intense lust for one another. I'm all for that, but I would have liked to see more from the characters. Not only that, but I felt that this story lacked substance. It was more sex than plot. Don't get me wrong, I'm no prude and enjoy titillating and well written sex scenes (which Marie excels at writing). However, I also want an emotionally layered story to balance out all the sex in the story. There were numerous sex scenes that was just within pages of one another and I ended up skimming a lot of them.

Since Reaper's Reward was heavy on the sex and light on the plot it was harder for me to be invested in the story. With so many pages dedicated to the sex scenes, the story itself fell flat as it lacked development . Unfortunately, the story wasn't very interesting to me and so it lost my interest along the way. However, the writing was flawless and smooth as usual. It had a good pacing and moved the story along nicely.

In the end, due to the lack of connection with the characters and lack of story development, I just couldn't get into Reaper's Reward. Even though this was a miss for me, I highly enjoy Marie's writing style and voice so I will continue to check out her other stories.

*I received a review copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
