Publishers Weekly
When high school senior Lilliana Young becomes mystically tethered to a resurrected Egyptian mummy, her upper-crust, micromanaged New York City lifestyle is turned upside down. Lilliana and Amon, the resurrected prince and carrier of the Eye of Horus, travel to Egypt in search of Amon’s brothers, who are needed to complete a thousand-year-old ritual that will prevent Seth, the “Dark One,” from rising. They meet the Grand Vizier, an archeologist devoted to helping the brothers, but trouble emerges in the form of an unknown necromancer who intercepts their every move with flesh-eating demons, poisonous dust, and zombies. Along the way, Lilliana must decide whether to sacrifice herself to prevent the world’s “unmaking.” In this series opener, Houck (the Tiger’s Curse series) introduces a fantasy teeming with Egyptian characters and mythological stories come to life. Though the Amon’s thematic metaphors (“My throat is as dry as a sandstorm in the desert”) are trying, and the scenes between adventures can be tedious, Houck’s moving depiction of the love between Lily and Amon is memorable. Children's Literature - Denise Hartzler
Colleen Houck provides readers an exciting journey from modern-day New York City to Ancient Egypt. The main character, Lily, is rich, smart, and very independent. She escapes the pressure of her society and parents by going to the Modern Museum of Art. Seeking quiet from the tourists, she is granted access to the closed Ancient Egypt exhibit. Within minutes she comes face-to-face with Amon, an Ancient Egyptian Prince who has reawakened. Amon raises once every millennium to reawaken his brothers. Together Lily and Amon perform a ceremony to maintain the alignment of the sun, moon, and stars. They do this to keep the God of Chaos, Seth, away for another one thousand years. Seth is more dangerous than Lily initially believes, as he is a shaper-shifter and double-crosses people in his path. Lily agrees to help Amon navigate New York City to embark on a journey to the Valley of Kings and the tomb of King Tut. Although Lily is a strong-willed and strong-headed, girl, Amon is ever heroic in his native land and will do anything to protect Lily. The story is filled with excitement of travel, deadly traps, Egyptian myth, magic, and romance. Houck delivers a novel that will be sure to swoon readers and keep them reading page after page. The only question is whether or not the main character is relatable to most students. In the first third of the book, readers learn how privileged Lily is and that may rub audiences the wrong way. Reviewer: Denise Hartzler; Ages 14 up.
VOYA, October 2015 (Vol. 38, No. 4) - Meghann Meeusen
Seventeen-year-old Lilliana Young has always been the perfect daughter, but she quietly dreams of a life beyond her penthouse hotel home and the expectations of her rich socialite parents. A tough New Yorker, Lily finds herself in a whirlwind quest when she meets the risen mummy, Amon, a stunningly gorgeous Egyptian prince who wakes every thousand years to complete a sacred ceremony to keep the dangerous god Seth at bay. This time, however, dark forces work against Amon, causing him to form a supernatural connection with Lily, drawing upon her strength to travel to Egypt and wake his brothers. Amon and Lily’s connection allows him to read her thoughts, but as it weakens her and they grow closer, both begin to fear that saving the world will require the ultimate sacrifice. The first in a new series, Reawakened uses Egyptian motifs to weave a tale of a no-nonsense heroine struggling with her growing feelings for a handsome mummy on a mythical quest and with old-world sensibilities that seem too good to be true. Yet Amon’s devotion is real—both to his responsibility as the world’s savior, and as the story progresses, to Lily, who also makes a significant commitment by using her life-force to sustain him. While the text takes some liberties with mythology and history, fans of paranormal romance will love the Egyptian spin on this story of devotion and sacrifice, and Lily’s humor, combined with plentiful dangerous escapades, will keep readers engaged. Reviewer: Meghann Meeusen; Ages 12 to 18.

Gr 7 Up—In this modern-day fantasy, privileged New York teen Lily escapes the pressure from her parents and false friends by seeking refuge in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. On the first day of her spring break, she meets Amon, an Egyptian prince, who was mummified, yet rises once every millennia to reawaken his brothers and perform a ceremony to maintain the sun, moon, and the stars aligned and to keep the God of Chaos, Seth, away for another 1,000 years. Lily helps Amon navigate New York City, and he educates her about his past and the rituals of his native land. Together they travel to Egypt with the hope of achieving his immortality once again. Lily is a very self-aware heroine, who feels like an outcast except when she meets the resurrected royal. Amon is a mystery, a man of power and knowledge, and Lily stereotypically falls for him and can't help getting involved in helping him in his quest. The pacing of the story is even, with exciting culminating battle scenes. Rick Riordan fans who are looking for another series will delight in this fantasy. VERDICT An incredibly well-researched novel with an air of mystery and romance.—Stephanie DeVincentis, Downers Grove North High School, IL
Kirkus Reviews
A reanimated mummy has an important mission and needs 17-year-old Lily in order to succeed. Lily is astonished to find a living pre-Pharaonic Egyptian king named Amon behind the scenes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Nothing in her privileged life has prepared Lily for what comes next as Amon takes her on one cyclone of an adventure. Amon rises from his sarcophagus every 1,000 years to protect the world from the destructive chaos of Seth, the Dark One. However, this time something has gone disastrously wrong, so Amon needs to borrow Lily's life force. Pragmatic Lily is no fragile bloom, but when Amon says things like, "You are as fresh and as lovely as a budding flower kissed by the dew of a golden morning," she can't help but notice his "physical splendor." But Amon, charming and kind though he may be, is harboring secrets that keep him from reciprocating Lily's growing love. The author weaves her story out of Egyptian lore, cinematic magic, selfless love, and cheesy dialogue, threading it with such oddities as a half-man, half-crocodile monster, massive biting worms, and rickety zombies. The tale feels occasionally overstuffed with mythology but is clever enough to remain surprising even to the last sentence. Happily, this paranormal romance has enough humor to keep the pages flipping, though it's unlikely to attract fans not already devoted to the genre. (Paranormal romance. 14-18)

Reawakened is one of my favorite books of all time. Colleen Houck does an amazing job of developing characters and creating a captivating story. I started and finished the book the day I got it and reread it from time to time. Just like her other books it doesn't disappoint nor does it ever get tiring. I highly recommend this book especially if you enjoy adventure mixed with a refreshing love story!

I absolutely loved this book. In the beginning I was as out-of-the-loop as Lily was. But as the story went on I could NOT put the book down. I loved Lily and Amon's chemistry, even though he kept trying to stop her from doing anything, and was extremely vague. But Lily didn't let that stop her and powered through. I loved all of the magic and history that swirled through this book, and I am aching for the next one!!

So lets go back to the beginning. Lilliana Young has a simple outlook on life. She wants freedom, happiness, and romance that you can only find in books. Her parents on the other hand, like the hand-fed, silver spoon treatment. So to get away, she visits the Metropolitan Museum and stumbles upon a mummy who is not quite as dead as he is supposed to be. Amon, the ancient prince of Egypt has awaken and takes her on a wild, chaotic, heart-flipping adventure through Egypt where they must resurrect his two dead brothers, and must stop the evil forces that arise. I have to say, your left with quite a cliff hanger, so this is definitely at the top of my to-be-read book list. (No spoilers) I’m definitely excited for this sequel. I love Lily & Amon’s relationship and struggles as well as the 2 brothers. Humor and love and compassion all surrounded the first book and I can’t wait to read more.

A wonderful book that brings me back to my memories and knowledge of places I've visited in both New York and Egypt, as well as bringing me back into discovering more about the World of Egyptian Mythology. A wonderful book full of romance and adventure, the book that inspired me to create a collection of quotes, as well as a necklace I wear everyday.

Since the Tiger's Curse series is one of my favorites that I continue to re-read, I was excited to learn that Colleen Houck had started a new series- AND, it's about Egypt, who doesn't love Egypt? I got about 5 chapters into this book and had to call it quits. I was extremely disappointed in the characters that Houck had created. Instead of a strong, independent, smart character like Kelsey from Tiger's Curse, I was reading about Lilliana, a bratty, love-struck girl. She was literally cursed into following the Prince to fulfill his every whim, would get mad at him for making her do things, and then forgive him because he was hott. Um.. no thank you. I want my characters to have a little more depth to them than that. Very disappointing.

I am an avid reader and I can honestly say this may be my favorite read of 2016. I may be late to the game but I wish with all my heart that this becomes some sort of series. I cried at the end and I want to read it again and again

I was given an advanced copy of this novel from the publisher via Netgalley for an honest review. This novel immediately caught my eye when I met the author at Salt Lake FanX last year, more so because of the Egyptian idea than anything else. I was ecstatic to receive an advanced copy and just wow, this novel was amazing. We follow Lily as she goes to her favorite place, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC and heads to the Egyptian area to do something thinking (note: I have LOVED that part of the museum since I was little and unfortunately have not been back in many, many years but I can still picture it) and start to decide what to do with her life. Unexpectedly, it seems fate decided to put a mummy and a worldwide Armageddon type crisis in her path for her spring break; and she thought figuring out about colleges was going to be a challenge?! This exciting story takes us through Egyptian lore and secret societies as well as wondrous magic that could seemingly pass for being around us in entirety even now. This magical book had me hooked and I could not wait to finish. My only question is with the epilogue as it is are we going to hear of more adventures with Amon and Lily? Did Anubis know all along? Is there another book in the works? Either way I think the ending was spectacular and would be excited for a second book but perfectly happy if we left the story as is. Amazing novel and I would highly recommend it, especially to all you Egyptian lovers out there like me.

Im surprised. No denying it, this book is literally tigers curse with some minor differences, but i cant say im mad about it! I loved it! At first i wasnt completely sold and the realtionship between lilly and amon i wasnt feeling but that completely changed AND I NEED IT IN MY LIFE. It was so hard putting this book down and now that im done i find myself longing to be back within its pages, starving for some more of this world, of these characters. Bring me book 2 now or pay the consequences. xD
