Overview

Thirty-five tracks, 33 of them chart-topping singles, comprise this set by one of the reigning queens of heartbreak -- starting with 1982’s “Can’t Even Get the Blues” and ending with 2 new songs, recorded for this collection, that belong in the rarified air of the summit. Reba’s explored the tough turf of lovers gone awry, and on that count, tear-jerkers such as the churning “Somebody Should Leave” and “You Lie,” a soaring cry of the heart, dig into the marrow of disintegrating relationships with a power and perception few other artists can muster. The new songs, though, accentuate the positive. Disc 1 opens with “You’re Gonna Be,” a lovely ballad with strings and electric keyboard dominant, in which Reba gives a newborn some advice on overcoming life’s inevitabilities and assuring her of a mother’s never-ending love, no matter what. And for an artist who has made an art of the cheatin’ song, the other new number offers a different perspective: A stomping, rocking little ditty, “Love Needs a Holiday” describes a married couple sneaking off to the Holiday Inn, not with new lovers but together; the kids are with Grandma, and there’s nothing ahead but “room service, dinner, with candles and wine / A night with no homework and no baby cryin’ / They hold each other like they used to do...” Balancing restraint and exultation, this latest #1 (at least it oughta be) from Reba illustrates why it takes two discs to catalog her best. –David McGee

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
It's hard to believe, but 2005's double-disc #1's is the first multi-disc retrospective of Reba McEntire's career, which has had several single-disc sets prior to this. While this, like many similarly titled collections, does not strictly follow the rules set up in its title -- not counting the two new songs that open up each disc here, there are 11 songs among these 35 tracks that did not hit number one in Billboard's country charts -- it's hard to complain about this. After all, #1's includes all of her number one singles, and those 11 hit singles that did not make it to the top spot all were Top Five singles and rank among her best work. Taken together, they make for the best overview of and introduction to McEntire's lengthy, consistent career.
