I am a fan of the Amish/Mennonite genre. I believe I have read books from every author in the genre. Some paint a too-good-to-believe picture. Others go to the opposite extreme. Eicher writes in the middle. He grew up Amish and is now Mennonite, so he does have obvious legitimacy in his writing. He characters try to follow God, but they have obvious flaws that you do not read about in other books of this genre. I was shocked to see that two characters were so preoccupied with money. One character had a tendency to be nosy. The main character is extremely naïve. She is naïve to the point that an English person cannot really relate. These flaws were not at all the focus of the book. They were woven in subtly to add to the believability of this amazing read. Unlike other books in this genre, this is not a book where you are turning the pages to see "who done it". This is just a book to read and enjoy the literary ride. There are little facts about the Amish way of life intertwined with the fiction. I just have one complaint: why have a character named Elmo? Everyone English associates that name with the furry red character. Eicher is a welcomed addition to the Amish/Mennonite genre. I hope he keeps writing, because I will keep reading his books. This is an average book. Not exciting and pretty predictable.
