Overview

Magiere the Dhampir was created by a shadowy, long-forgotten enemy of many names-an enemy who the elf Leesil was trained from childhood to kill. They were brought together by the Fay to forge an alliance that might have the power to stand against the forces of dark magics. But as Magiere and Leesil uncover the truth, they discover just how close the enemy has always been...

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
After four rip-roaring dark fantasy adventures featuring protagonists Magiere and Leesil -- a sexy, half-dead vampire hunter and a handsome half-breed elf -- Barb and J. C. Hendee's Noble Dead saga (Dhampir, Thief of Lives, et al.) reaches a pivotal point with this fifth installment.

On a desperate quest to free Leesil's mother from imprisonment in the treacherous Elven Territories, Leesil and Magiere -- accompanied by Wynn, a young female sage, and Chap, a dog who was born with an ancient Fay spirit inhabiting its body -- nearly die in their trek across the Broken Range in the dead of winter. But the enigmatic Chap finds a way through the mountains, and the unlikely quartet enter the magical Elven lands...only to find themselves face-to-face with its volatile inhabitants -- and a truth so unimaginable that it will turn Magiere and Leesil's world upside down…

Fans of the Hendees' Noble Dead series who have been trying to understand the saga's many unexplained mysteries will be absolutely blown away by the bombshell plot twists revealed in Rebel Fay. With only one book (tentatively entitled Child of a Dead God) to go before the series concludes, the husband-and-wife writing duo has set the stage for what should be an explosive final volume. Fantasy fans who like their adventures done very rare -- fast and bloody -- should definitely check out this addictively readable saga, which seamlessly blends the vampire mythos with high fantasy. Paul Goat Allen
Publishers Weekly
The Hendees' entertaining fifth installment in the Noble Blood series (Traitor of Blood, etc.), a hybrid crossing Tolkienesque fantasy with vampire-infused horror, finds half-vampire Magiere and half-elf Leesil in the Elven Territories, searching for Leesil's imprisoned elven mother, Nien'a. The pair are accompanied by their preternaturally intelligent canine protector, Chap, and Wynn, a human sage who can connect psychically with Chap. On their mission to rescue Nien'a from her own people, the gang must battle the hateful elven leader, Most Aged Father, and his followers' prejudice against the human race. In an intriguing parallel adventure, the elegant vampire Welstiel, with the help of his undead companion, Chane, continues his quest for "the orb" that will free him of his blood lust. New readers might find the plot mystifying at times, but fans will enjoy the ongoing clash between elves, humans and the undead. (Jan.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
From The Critics
The half-elven warrior Leesil; his part-human, part-vampire lover, Magiere; the human sage Wynn; and their canine companion, Chap, enter the forbidden Elven Territories in search of Leesil's mother, now imprisoned by a caste of elven protectors—or assassins. Along the way, their encounters with the elves bring unexpected allies and implacable enemies as their steps bring them closer to the knowledge of who they truly are and what destiny lies in wait for them. The authors of Traitor to the Bloodhave crafted a tale of ancient enmities, longstanding treacheries, and a hidden evil and peopled it with fascinatingly complex characters. Suitable for most fantasy collections, their latest novel, along with its series predecessors, has particular appeal for fans of fantasy quests and vampire fiction.

Filled with plenty of action, romance and elven intrigue

Ever since he found the skulls of his grandmother and father and learned that his mother was being held prisoner by the elfin caste of Anmaglahk (Assassins) Leesil is obsessed with going into Elven Territories and rescuing her. His lover Dhampire Magiere, the sage Wynn, and the dog Chap, a Fay taking mortal form accompany him. He knows none of them will be welcome in the Elven lands because Mortangel Father hates humans and is doing his best to set them against each other in their own lands.------------------- Caught in a blizzard, something guides themto a labyrinth of caves and sets them on an underground path that leads to the Elven Territories. Before they can go to look for Leesil¿s mother, Most Aged Father tells Leesil that he will free her if he finds out the names of the rebels who are trying to free themselves from his rule. Leesil refuses and Chap leads him to his mother who due to magic cannot leave the area. When Magiere¿s Dhampire nature surfaces, she is put on trial and only Leesil can save her if the land and the ancestors accept his half-elven heritage.----------------------- REBEL FAY brings readers one step closer to understanding why Leesil¿s mother trained him as an assassin, a weapon to be used against the unknown enemy of the elves and why Magiere was created with the blood of the five races running through her veins. Filled with plenty of action, romance and elven intrigue, Magiere and Leesil work together against their common enemies to free the latter¿s mother and cast doubts on Most Aged Father¿s ability to lead.--------------- Harriet Klausner

    Great book

This book is another great chapter in the saga of the Noble Dead. I appreciated this book in that it reveals a lot about Leesil's past and why he acts the way he does. The book also gives more information about Chap and his connection to his kin, which was another mystery I always wanted to get to the bottom of. Many things are still left unexplained, however, and I'm anxious to see how it all comes together in the end.
