Overview

Beginning with the day Jordan's father was murdered, and stretching through a two-year odyssey across the American landscape, Rebound is the story of the world's most famous athlete's personal journey in search of himself. Bestselling author Bob Greene was there with Jordan every step along the way. Here is his detailed, intimate chronicle, rich with the sound of Jordan's own voice in long and candid conversations with Greene. In minor-league dugouts and packed NBA arenas, alone with Jordan at home or riding down the highway with him, during the lowest days in the backroads world of small-town baseball and the headiest nights in ornate basketball stadiums where thousands cried his name, Rebound is the story of a man who seemingly had everything the world could offer, and then, in pain, left it behind in an effort to rediscover who he once was, and who he wanted to be.

Like Babe Ruth and Joe Louis, Michael Jordan is a national icon, one of the country's most celebrated and intriguing personalities. In startling and moving detail, Jordan discusses with Bob Greene his personal journey, taking readers along as he explores the events that brought him down to earth--and the spirit that brought him back from the brink. An intimate look into the life and character of Michael Jordan

Bob Greene's novel, Rebound: The Odyssey of Michael Jordan, provides an interesting look into the journey of Michael Jordan attempting to rediscover who he is, and become who he wants to be. The story in told by Greene, who is a personal friend of Jordan's that is told in a series of conversations and phone calls with Jordan. The book begins talking about how Jordan was dealing the violent murder of his father, which is later revealed to be the primary for retiring from basketball for the first time. Jordan then defies critics and does what he really wants to do, play baseball. He went behind the media's back and started to practice with the major leaguers. Eventually, Jordan fulfilled his childhood dream of playing baseball. But he proved unsuccessful in the minor leagues with the farm team for the Chicago White Sox, the Birmingham Barons. Jordan then returned to basketball, claiming the largest NBA contract to date and eventually going on to win three more NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls. The story also includes Jordan and Greene talking about the adversity and doubts Jordan faced while he was in high school and college, which motivated him to get better. Jordan declared to Greene, "I think a lot of people want me to fail. Good. Let them keep saying it. The person who is going to have to succeed of fail is me not them" (23) while addressing criticisms of his choice to play baseball. One of the things I most liked about this book was the insight to how Jordan used criticism of his ability and drive to make him try harder in order to prove them wrong. Also, I was surprised about the insight the book gave as to why Jordan tried to play professional baseball. Jordan told Greene, "This is something my father (who had recently been murdered) always wanted me to do"(22). While speaking about Jordan's dreams of baseball, he said "In those odd baseball dreams, the cheers were cheers of hope (as opposed to basketball cheers that were demands)"(23). I think people of all ages should read this book because it provides inspiration to follow your dreams. Also, another re occurring theme is the idea that you should not be deterred by critics because they only want you to fail, so prove them wrong. This book was insightful and encouraging, and if you like it, try reading Bob Greene's first novel about Michael Jordan, Hang Time about Jordan's journey to his first three NBA titles. Overall Rating: Five out of five.

    THE LIFE OF A LEGEND

The life of A Legend REBOUND THE ODYSSEY OF MICHAEL JORDAN was Bob Greene¿s latest book. Its about Bob spending a couple of days with MJ and talking to him about his life and struggles with family and also getting in the NBA and in. He found out MJ¿S feelings, thoughts, and memories. Some of Bob Greens previous books were Billion Dollar Baby, Johnny Deadline Reporter and many more. But none of his previous books compared to this one. It attracted a lot of people who like MJ. He shared many memories with bob no one knew before. All throughout, Greene found out more and more things about him. They spoke about how its was hard for him to get into the NBA. That in NC were he attended college they didn¿t believe in him. How he felt like he wasn¿t good enough at some points of his life. As he said to himself ¿ I¿m not going to let anyone tell me if I¿m good or bad I¿m going to prove everyone wrong¿. ( Greene, 66) As he said he proved everyone wrong scoring the winning shot in the 1989 NCAA finals with that winning the 1989 NCAA Championship. Right after that he was promoted into the NBA Draft. His life changed for ever. He was about to make a big decision in his life which was his dream. He took the offer and was the new player for the Chicago Bulls in the 1990 season. He was assigned the number 23. He won the NBA championship in 1991, 1992 1993. Winning MVP all three years and also winning rookie player of the year in 1990. The second theme of the book focuses more on the tragedies of his life and his problems. He explained how he went through and was living his life without his dad. He told Bob how his dad had died while in his car a fan wanted an autograph and when he opened the window the man shot him killing him instantly. He said he felt like the whole world had fallen on him. He was very depressed for couple of weeks that he didn¿t know what he was going to do about his life. In 1994 he said in a press conference that he was retiring. He did retire. One of his word that he said after he retire while watching TV with Bob in his house were ¿ the media think that I know what im going to do with my life but only If they knew that I don¿t know they ay im the only one who know what im going to do next but they are wrong¿. ( Bob, 156) he said this because everyone was wondering what he was going to do after he had retired. He started playing baseball for the Chicago White Sox but that didn¿t go to well. He stopped and went back to playing basketball announcing his comeback in 1995 winning NBA titles in 96, 97, and 98. MJ was like to be called as not an open man but more of a private and calm man. While in the NBA Nike promoted him to have his own shoe made by them name after him Michael Jordan¿s. Later on became owner of the shoes. All in all, MJ shared a lot of memories and special moments of his life with BOB green that no one ever knew about him that he had never shared with anyone. I liked this book a lot because I got to learn a lot of the greatest basketball player ever a player who I admire a lot. It talks about his life and struggles no other person got to know about him. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the Chicago Bulls and a Michael Jordan fan. When I was reading the book it made me feel as if I were in that same spot with them .

Probably the most in-depth MJ bio ever written

This book really gives you an insight on Jordan's life. It reads like fiction, and really doesn't have a specific place where it drags. The entire book is fast-paced and interesting. I don't think this book could have many improvements other than writing a bit more about his basketball life.
