Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Bestselling author Quick's ( Rendezvous ) latest lovers are a pair of bibliophiles whose engaging qualities should help her many devoted fans overlook this work's fatal flaw: it is an unconvincing attempt to draw a parallel between a Regency romance heroine and a medieval hero on a quest. Lady Phoebe Layton's ``quest'' is to track down the person who killed her suitor, Neil Baxter, and to ``bring the villain to justice.'' Neil was making his fortune in the South Seas, where he reportedly was killed by a pirate who stole an old and valuable book she gave him; rumor says the book is back in England. Ignoring the fact that real questers don't delegate, Phoebe persuades fellow book collector Gabriel Banner, Earl of Wylde, to find the rare tome and the murderer. Phoebe's growing attachment to Gabriel prompts him to consider using her to seek revenge on her father, who, eight years earlier, ruined Gabriel and drove him out of England--to the South Seas. Quick expends little effort on this revenge scheme, which is in no danger of coming to fruition; as a result this fantasy castle seems built on a foundation of sand. (Dec.)

    An Unusual Tale

I thought that overall the book was pretty good. Thought it could have had a few more twists and turns in it, a little more vengeance and a little more strength from the leading lady. Liked the idea about the manuscripts being a big part of the book. Not a bad book, but it could have been better.

    Different

The story was interesting, but different from what I was expecting. I listened to the audiobook version and did not care for the narrator.

    Many Mistakes

I could only read the first few pages of this book before I had to stop because of all of the spelling and grammar errors.

Publisher was sloppy with this one.

The "Amanda Quick" books are always a delight to read. But, the publisher could have done a much better job with this conversion to e-book. There were typos every 3 or 4 pages. My favorite was the word "carnage" for "carriage." Often these typos looked like a paper version was scanned and the OCR was never checked. I would have expected better from Random House.

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

I really enjoyed this book!! One of Amanda Quicks best!

This was one of the very few books that, when I was finished, I immediately started to re-read it. The characters are great. It is funny, exciting, and very romantic.

    Outstanding

I love this book, i found myself unable to put it down. phobe is feisty and very headstrong, its a love story but perhaps not the most romantic and thats what makes it all the more better. great characters, storyline and ending, 10/10 i would love a sequel......

    Wonderful!

I loved this book to the max! I consider myself a regular reader on Amanda's books, and I can say with all my heart that this was one of her bests! It has danger, romance, and makes you smile when you notice that their similar interests go beyond each other.

    i want to respond

I want to respond the feminist's opinion. Though I have not read this book and was only browsing, this review(her review) caught my eye. Unless I'm mistaken and really don't know history but did women in the 19th century women have rights? I think not. They were property of their fathers and eventually their husbands, the mere fact that this women (Phoebe) COULD SEEK the help of a male without a man's permission speaks volumes. I think her review was not based on what the book was about but more on personal problem. Save the reviews that tell me your social believes....I want to know what the book is about.

    FEAMLES AREN'T THIS WEAK!

Why is it that all her female characters are always in some type of trouble and need a man to get them out of it?! Females weren't that weak back then. The romance in this story relies solely on the male for it's relief. I feel so angry when i read a story like this. Consider a more active role for your women.
