My name is Larkspur, and I am an Elemental.

My people use the power of the earth to sustain life and defy our enemies. I should be at my father's side as a royal princess. But as a half-breed, bastard child, that isn't going to happen.

I've been accused of attacking the queen, my wicked stepmother, and my life is suddenly on the line. I have only two options left to me: banishment, or training to become one of the King's Elite Guards, an Ender.

Option one will kill me.
Option two is meant to break me, but it's the only way to survive.

Did I mention I have no power like the rest of the elementals, and my connection to the earth is worth next to nothing?

Could things get any worse? Of course they can. Welcome to being an Elemental

I have read all the Rylee Adamson novels, so I was really looking forward to starting this new urban fantasy series by Shannon Mayer, and I am happy to say that I was not disappointed. I will admit that this book took me a bit longer to get into than the first Rylee novel, but I think there was some complicated world-building that had to occur in the beginning, so that is to be expected.  And what an interesting and different world that Ms. Mayer has created!  It is refreshing to read a story that doesn’t follow the same formula that so many urban fantasy novels track.  As an Earth Elemental who appears to have little connection to the Earth, Larkspur is relegated to the fields to work, despite the fact that she is the illegitimate daughter of the King of the Earth Elementals.  But take nothing and no one for granted in this novel—what I love most about it is that not everything is as it appears. If you are looking for the typical paranormal romance genre of girl meets boy, girl hates boy but falls for him anyway, and all works out in the end, this is not the story for you.  But if you are looking for a story about a loyal, kick-butt heroine to whom you can relate and root for, then this is the book for you.  I cannot wait for the next book in this series! I was provided this ARC copy by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I just flipped to the last page of Recurve, and I'm in awe of Shannon's world-building abilities. Rich details built a mental image piece by piece until I felt as though I were standing in the redwood forest watching Larkspur as she fought to preserve not only her home but those she loves as well. Lark's innate ability to love her family and fight for them, despite their indifference and lack of acceptance, shows in her a capacity for being a hero. Their cruel titles of "Useless" and "Cuckoo" might be painful, but she rises to the challenge when others might've walked away or taken the easier path. Lark must dig deep to find the powers Cassava blocked from her long ago before it's too late, and without the support of a family, she must find her own confidence and learn to fight and defend not only herself but those who shun her. From the moment I read the first chapter, I was completely hooked and wanted to fly through each page until the end. This series is worth rereading, and I'm so excited to move onto the next.

I was thrilled to see that Shannon Mayer was starting a new series. I immediately connected with Lark and fell in love with the, rich, nature-filled Elemental World. The story was intriguing, the characters well developed, and kept you guessing. I could not put the book down and look forward to reading more about Lark, her World and following her adventures to her ultimate destiny.

4.5 I was provided this ARC copy by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Where to even start...we first meet Larkspur in Elementally Priceless in the Rylee Adamson Novel Series, when she first met a young Rylee on her first savage. I fell in love with her character right then and there when she risked all to help a young girl who wanted to prove she could do things on her own but still needed a bit of help. So when I heard that Mrs. Mayer would be giving Lark her own series I was thrilled. We start from the very beginning with Lark. We see her tragedies and triumphs and we feel her pain as if it were our own. Lark has been accused of something she hasn't done and the only thing she can do is accept banishment or become a guardian to the king (her father). Even though technically Lark is a princess she isn't treated like one by many and she is seen as useless. But there is so much more to Lark than anyone knows including herself. There are a few secrets and lies and sometimes you just want to shake a character or two. I was left wanting the next part right after I finished the last page of Recurve and I believe this series will be as successful as the Rylee series. The only issue I had with the story was there was more tell than show. Meaning Lark would overcome something and say "It couldn't possibly get worse" and instead of ending it right there, Lark would say "I was wrong". I would have rather saw she was wrong then to be told beforehand that she was going to be wrong (if that makes sense). All in all this was a wonderful start to a brand new series.

Recurve was a fantastic roller coaster ride of emotions.  I could not put it down and I greedily consumed it in one sitting.   I consider this to be a fantastic recasting of a Fae version of cinderella.  Shannon Mayer has done it again and I'm definitely looking forward  to exploring this new world.  This book is Lark's journey to self-discovery as she tries to right the wrongs done to her family and to save her  father the king.  Lark is no helpless Disney character waiting for a prince to rescue her.  She fully takes matters into her own hands and  carves her own path.  I can't wait for the sequel to come out so I can revisit this world.  I was provided this ARC copy by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Another fantastic story by Shannon Mayer!! First of all…I have read the entire Rylee series and loved EVERY book…so I knew that Shannon’s new Elemental Series was going to be good. Second…in the Rylee Elemental 0.5 book, Larkspur was introduced to the readers and I just loved the strong, lonely, and loyal character that she was to Rylee. Another surprise is the appearance of another character from the Rylee series that answers some questions in this book of where he disappeared to! This book is Larkspur’s back story..and it is captivating story that you just can’t put down!  One of the biggest things I enjoyed about this story was the characters names. I don’t know about you..but when I read a story with complicated names…it irritates me that I am constantly trying to sound the name out in my head. Shannon’s character names are amazing!! This story we have Ash, Granite, Snapdragon, Fern, Cactus, Coal, Raven, Briar…and they go on. I love all the references to the forest and red woods…and nature beyond. This is a story about a girl’s struggles in life…but also to FIND life. Hers.  I highly recommend this book to all readers and I can’t wait for the next installment of the Elemental Series. Oh…and let me reassure you…there is no cliff hanger ending…so you won’t have to wait on the edge of your seat for the next book ;)  I was provided this ARC copy by the publisher for an honest review.

Recurve is a slow burn....a waltz with incredible depth and creativity. Shannon Mayer is one of those rare authors who can cross genres with a fluid writing style that makes her stand out from all others. The Rylee Adamson Novels are my favorite urban fantasy series and have a very unique style to the writing. Rylee has her own voice without a doubt. The Nevermore Trilogy is an incredibly unique take on the apocalypse that no one else has done before and her romances are the type which take chances and break out of the normal New Adult mold. With Recurve, she's introduced us to yet another voice of hers that is absolutely incredible. This story is full of love, betrayal, scheming, plotting, true friends and true possibilities. The story of Larkspur begins with Recurve and is written in a manner which feels similar to a waltz. It isn't the racing ahead full on action packed frenzy that Rylee Adamson is or the intensely suspenseful romance that The Nevermore books are, but it's almost more enticing because of that. It's a slow burn that by the end of the book leaves you feeling fulfilled and wanting more. We find another strong female protagonist in Lark, but one full of questions, insecurities and an inner strength she is only beginning to grab a hold of. The character growth of Lark just within this first novel is incredible - I can't imagine how much more she'll grow through the whole series. I felt like I just smoothly moved through this book. I was never once bored and the end came far too soon even though it's a full length novel. I was left with actually FEELING this book. The descriptions of everything is so in depth and unique, you're not reading, you're constantly feeling everything. I experienced this book, I didn't just read it. The elemental world Ms. Mayer created is unlike any other I've read. The characters are so unique and each has their own purpose and future-it leaves things open to so many possibilities. While not a huge fantasy fan myself....I have found with Recurve, I am incredibly addicted to this elemental world and these characters who plot, love, inhabit and grow within it. I feel disloyal to Rylee, but I honestly like Larkspur more and can see such an amazing future ahead of her. This is a series I will follow without a doubt and love to see the author stretching her wings with every new venture she has. She's not afraid to do things other authors might be-yes, she kills characters off sometimes in her books - but no knowing what will unfold and the unexpectedness of her stories adds an undeniable draw to her work. Thank you for bringing us Lark and I can't wait to take this new journey with her.

I have enjoyed each of Shannon’s books and waited anxiously for new releases. This Elemental Series is no different. It was an excellent read from beginning to end. I was provided this ARC copy by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. But I would have bought this book regardless and be glad I did. I enjoyed hearing the story of Lark and her strength. To have another strong female to read about that wasn’t waiting to be saved was good! And again I am waiting anxiously for the next book in the series… The book gives us background of Larks life and the cruel relationship with her family. As a half breed she is treated poorly. We see the Queen and her wicked ways she treats Lark and her plans that unfold throughout the book. You feel for Lark as she is mistreated by her father, the King, and you can’t help but feel for her and connect. We see the people in her life we hope are her friends. And find out those that surprisingly are not. This book will not disappoint.

I’ve been a follower of Shannon Mayer since the first Rylee Adamson series. I thought I’d never met a woman as fearless and fierce as Rylee. Now, I’m having second thought after reading Recurve. I think Larkspur aka Lark is the new heroine to watch out for. Lark is a princess without a crown. She’s an Elemental without power. She’s serving the Kingdom as a Planter instead of a Royal, simply because she was deemed useless without her elemental gifts. Haunted by her mother & brother’s deaths, Lark did her best to be liked and loved by her Father, the King. But after being accused of attacking Queen Cassava, Lark found herself training to become an Ender. That is the only way she’d be able to survive. Little did she know that her decision might just be the catalyst to her death. I had a super great time reading Lark and her adventures. Shannon Mayer is a brilliant and impressive author, she immediately sucked me in to her fantastic world. There’s so much awesomeness wrapped up in the book. Plus, the names of the characters are really cool and unique. From Cactus, to Coal, Raven to Belladonna, from Granite to Ash, from Fern to Griffin, these amazing Elementals just keep getting better and better. Although this first book is a bit longer than usual, Recurve is a pleasure to read. It doesn’t feel rushed. Rather, the whole story resonates with substance and every page matters. The ending left an ample room for a sequel. It isn’t like those first books where you are really left hanging with those unanswered questions on your mind. Simply put, Recurve is very satisfying. The urban fantasy and paranormal elements are intricately woven into the story. That’s what makes Recurve an engrossing and heart-pounding read. I guess, many readers would agree with me when I say, Lark has surpassed its predecessor, Rylee. NOTE: I was provided this ARC copy by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I received an Advanced Reader's Copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review ...........I fell in love with Shannon Mayer an her Rylee Adamson series so, when Recurve came out I knew I had to read it. We first met Larkspur in the Rylee Adamson series so it was really nice to read her story. Larspurk is a young girl who has been dealt more then one bad blow in her life. Watching her learn how to become the person she was born to be had me sitting on the edge of seat. I couldn't put this book down. There is a lot of action an spunk in this story. I really can't say more as I hate spoilers so I wont put any in here. If your looking for a book that has heartache, intense action an strong female lead then you need to get a copy of this book.

I was provided this ARC by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. The Rim is a fantastic realm existing beyond human reach. Outcast and a virtual orphan, as the illegitimate daughter of the earth elemental king, Larkspur is forced to forge her way alone. With enigmatic dreams as her only clue that something is amiss, Lark, unable to access her elemental powers, is forced to toil in a lesser station as a planter. Lark’s relationship with her father, stepmother queen Cassava , and half siblings is tenuous, but when she’s accused of attacking Cassava she is forced to make a choice; train as an Ender, or face banishment, or even death, for her purported transgression. Lark endeavours to be an Ender, but it’s an undertaking, this ‘recurve’ of her abilities, she has little hope of surviving. Mayer’s new series opens with fantastic promise. The Elemental world is imaginative, but recognizable, and Larkspur a formidable female heroine. The reader is not permitted for a moment to truly believe Lark is useless. As a planter, she does the heaviest lifting, literally, and as an ender trainee she’s tenacious. Lark is a misfit, making her accessible, but she’s also a fighter, and this makes her riveting. She’s also in control of her sexuality, no shrinking virgins here. Make no mistake, this isn’t a romance novel. Although there are undercurrent hints of romantic attachment to come, this novel is all fantastic action and intrigue. I look forward to a connection being developed between Lark and Ash, her ender colleague and superior, in future installments. Coal, as Lark’s on-again, off-again diversion, will likely develop into character with distinct plot possibilities and entanglements. The writing is superb, as always with Mayer. The reader is certainly entrenched within the text from the start. The beautiful, vivid description and continual plot twists are engaging and entertaining. Although I like a good love story, this book transcends the omnipresent stereotypes and is truly refreshing in a variety of ways. Beneath the layers of the text exists a subtext of contemporary concerns such as environmental destruction, pandemic disease, even the more eccentric concern of zombie apocalypse. The finale of this series starter is intense and the suspense nearly killed me. The book doesn’t end with a cliff-hanger, but most certainly leaves the characters poised to brace against multiple looming threats. I eagerly anticipate book two in the Elemental Series.

What a great new start to a new series!! I LOVED this book!! No Princess waiting to be rescued. Larkspur is a neglected by her father because she is a half breed. She is accused of trying to kill her wicked stepmother, the Queen. She has no elemental powers to call upon to help her do what she must do to save herself. I am not writing a synopsis of the story but will leave you with some questions to this fantastic story. Will Lark ever find her powers? Will she be banished or will she become a part of the Elite Guard? Is there a plot to kill her father the King? What is the Queen up to? Will anyone help Lark? This story is emotional and at times heart stopping. The characters and storyline are so well built that I fell in love with this book and look forward to more in this series!! I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a good fantasy story!! I received a copy of this ARC for an honest review.
