Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amalia Selle
In raising of the next generation, we share a responsibility to educate children about the importance of protecting and preserving the environment. Lessons about recycling and conserving resources introduce children to life-long, environmentally friendly habits. This "Saving Our World" book presents the facts about recycling. The question time boxes focus on providing further information, such as more details about how paper is recycled. The eye-opener boxes provide interesting and sometimes shocking facts. For example, when donating used electronics to charities, check to be sure the charity is not selling it to salvagers in third-world countries. Salvagers burn the wiring to extract metals and in the process, release toxic chemicals into the air. This graphically pleasing nonfiction book could easily be used as further enrichment to back up a science textbook. While certainly not a text dense science book, it contains advanced terms such as alternative energy, petrochemical, global warming, and biodegradable. Whether used to review material or to expose children to issues facing our environment, this series would be a valuable addition to any classroom or personal library. The readable text, pictures, maps, index, and glossary make it accessible to various reading and interest levels. Reviewer: Amalia Selle
