An errant balloon with magical qualities becomes the companion of a young Parisian boy in this timeless fable by Albert Lamorisse, who relies much more on pictures than words to tell his affecting story. The director's White Mane, with its nearly as enchanting tale about a young boy and the wild horse only he can tame, also makes its disc debut. Newly restored, both of these treasured short films are essential for all collections.

This is a story of a neglected and friendless little boy, suppressed by a rigid, unforgiving nanny. He lives a lonely existence in a Paris high-rise apartment, and one day captures a free-floating red balloon that seems able to communicate with him. There is a poignancy that comes with the realization that his only friend is his Red Balloon. The two have a series of magical adventures as this bond of friendship develops between the two. They experience some of the prime qualities of friends: shared humor, loyalty, patience... and some of the pain, too, of threat, jealousy, and rejection from outsiders. The denouement of the story tells us of Hope after pain and loss... and shows the incredible healing power of real Friendship. As a teacher, I showed the video to my students and it sparked a vivid discussion among high school students and essays of remarkable insights. This is a work that spans generations and I feel the content has layers of subtlety to appeal to the very young... and the very not so young! This is, bottom line, a story of Compassion and our need to stay in touch with that quality in our lives.

The Red Ballon is a story about a young boy and his red balloon and their life in Paris. This story makes you think because it depends all on sybolism. People realate it in many differnent ways. Personally i don't see the balloon as his friend, i see its as a new invasion.
