Meet the Author

Henry Rider Haggard was born at Bradenham, Norfolk, to Sir William Meybohm Rider Haggard, a barrister, and Ella Doveton, an author and poet. He was the eighth of ten children. He was initially sent to Garsington Rectory in Oxfordshire to study under the Reverend H.J. Graham but, unlike his older brothers who graduated from various Public Schools, he ended up attending Ipswich Grammar School. This was because his father, who regarded him as somebody who was not going to amount to much, could no longer afford to maintain his expensive private education. After failing his army entrance exam he was sent to a private ‘crammer’ in London to prepare for the entrance exam for the British Foreign Office, which in the end he never sat. From Wikipedia,

An excellent book. Give it a try, you won't be sorry!

An incredible tale full of action. Set amidst war and the horrors of the black death, the is plenty of fighting. Yet there is also a touch of tender love and romance. But not too much. This would make a great movie. If hollywood did not change things as they so often do with literature. I do hope you give this book a try!

    Wonderful read.

This is the second book of H. Rider Haggard i have read in the last week and thoroughly enjoyed both. I have been adding more of his books to my nook. They are fast paced and filled with action and of course a love story. Great novel in my opinion.

    Fantastic Tale

Knights, archers, kings, love's tragic tale, adventure across Europe, and a touch of the beyond bringing a new perspective of the Black Death-how could I have never heard of this story before? Well written and worth a read!
