Raising the stakes...

It's a free-for-all, no-holds-barred, unofficial race it's a million dollars of prize money hanging in the balance! In other words — anything goes!

When Charger, Spitfire, Flyer, and Stunts square off against Team Rexcor on Rexcor's home track, it's dirty-tricks time to the max. But what Team Fastex doesn't know is that Rexcor has hidden a device in each of their cars allowing Garner Rexton to control the Fastex cars as they zoom down the track. One by one, the Team Fastex cars spin wildly out of control, manipulated by Junker, Specter, Zorina — and Garner Rexton himself!

The only person who discovers this devious deception is Charger's younger brother, ten-year-old Miles McCutchen. But no one will listen to him! It's up to Miles to take matters into his own hands.

Is it possible for a young boy like Miles to outwit the ruthless Garner Rexton? Maybe it's his destiny save the race for Charger and the others . . . or maybe this is the final race for Team Fastex!

Chapter One

Vroom! Vroom! Vroom! Vroom!

One by one, four racers from NASCAR's Unlimited Division entered the enormous black dome known as the Motorsphere. The giant machines, tearing down the track at nearly 400 miles per hour, were separated by mere inches.

The Motorsphere dominated the skyline of New Motor City and towered over the rest of Big River Raceway, the home track of Team Fastex. The huge crowd that had gathered for today's race stood and cheered as the massive machines roared from the brilliant sunshine of the raceway's main track into the death-defying loop within the cavernous, mysteriosdome.

The pack of race cars—quite simply the finest and fastest motorized land vehicles ever created—entered the Motorsphere with TeamFastex's Mark "Charger" McCutchen in the lead. Charger's eyes opened wide as they always did upon entering the dome, and the glaring sunlight gave way to the metallic glow glowing of halogen spotlights that illuminated the dome's tall, looping roadway.

Right on Charger's tail was Lyle Owens, known to racing fans as The Collector. The Collector drove for Team Fastex's arch rival, Team Rexcor, which had been known to use more than its share of dirty tricks to win races at any cost.

Behind The Collector raced the driver known as Redline O'Rourke. Redline was an independent driver not affiliated with any NASCAR team. He was even-tempered and quite skilled behind the wheel. Redline jockeyed for position, his jet-black racer trimmed with red stripes gaining slightly on The Collector's Rexcor machine.

The fourth driver to enter the Motorsphere was Megan "Spitfire"Fassler. Spitfire was not only one of Team Fastex's top drivers, but she was also a brilliant engineer and designer who had come up with many of the most important improvements to the cars. She also just happened to be the daughter of the Team Fastex owner, Jack Fassler.

The four racers, bunched together like one big mechanical monster, hit the first loop of the Motorsphere's interior track. Up and around they all went hanging upside down from the top of the high dome for a brief second before returning to earth at the bottom of their complete 360-degree loop.

Announcer Mike Hauger, breathless with excitement, called the race for the throng of fans who had crowded into the bleachers to soak in the skill, excitement, and touch of danger that was NASCAR Unlimited Series Racing.

"With less than a lap to go, Charger McCutchen's hanging on to a slim lead" he told the frenzied crowd.

As Charger reached the bottom of the Motorsphere's loop, The Collector increased his speed and slammed his right front bumper into the left rear fender of Charger's car.

"Up to your usual dirty tricks, eh, Owens?' Charger muttered to himself, fighting to keep his lead.

Mike Hauger reported the move to the fans. "It looks like The Collector's not going to let Charger win without a fight!" he announced.

With a deafening roar that shook the racetrack to its foundation, the four cars burst from the Motorsphere out onto a long straightaway, Charger maneuvering skillfully to keep The Collector at bay. "I'm crossing that finish line first, Collector," Charger muttered as he yanked his steering wheel hard to the right and mashed the accelerator to the floor.

As the racers headed into the track's final turn, with Charger battling to remain in front, The Collector reached for a lever on his dashboard. "We're crossing the finish line—together!" snarled The Collector as if in response to Charger's comment. He tugged hard on the lever, firing his booster rockets.

Vrooosshhh! Searing spikes of red and orange shot from the rear of The Collector's racer, propelling him forward in a fiery burst.

Wham! The Collector's front bumper slammed into Charger's rear bumper, locking the two speeding vehicles together, sending them spinning out of control toward the finish line just ahead.

In his racer, just several feet behind the two lead cars, Redline saw his opening. His eyes opened wide, his jaw clenched with determination, he took a deep, calming breath. Then he whipped his steering wheel hard to the left and gunned his engine, streaking past Charger and The Collector, who spun helplessly, shouting and cursing, trying desperately to untangle their metal mess.

Redline zoomed into the lead, followed closely by Spitfire, who, try as she might, could not get past the newcomer.

Voosh! Voosh! Redline crossed the finish line just seconds ahead of Spitfire. The electronic checkered flag flashed up on the track's giant scoreboard.

"Redline wins in a fantastic finish!" Mike Hauger shouted to the cheering crowd.

Charger and The Collector finally came to a stop. Both drivers leaped from their cars, shouting as they pulled off their racing helmets.

"Nice move, Owens!" Charger screamed. "And it didn't get you anywhere near the finish line, did it?"

"I notice you didn't win, either, McCutchen," The Collector replied. "And that makes me feel so much better."

Charger pitched his helmet into the open door of his car and stormed away. The Collector stared after him, then looked back at his own car and let out a frustrated grunt.

In Big River Raceway's Victory Lane, Redline and Spitfire stood before a crowd of fans and reporters. Photographers' flashbulbs popped as Redline held his winner's trophy high in the air with his right hand, his left hand casually slipping around Spitfire's waist.

Charger noticed this as he walked past the crowd. He paused, frowning, then turned and headed for the garage.

At that same moment, a tall, well-dressed man made his way through the crowd. He was followed by a mousy-haired, thin woman carrying a palmsize computer into which she nervously entered information.
