Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
These days, you need a DVD-ROM to get the entire Fedora distribution. No one book can could possibly cover it all. But Red Hat Fedora Unleashed comes close.

Bill Ball and Hoyt Duff start by walking you through Fedora partitioning and installation -- both manual and “KickStart”-automated. There’s detailed coverage of configuration: not only XFree86, as you’d expect, but also oft-neglected details like audio and power management.

Early on, you master the Linux file system: browsing files, sharing data, protecting directories, and more. You’ll learn how to manage services (including controlling boot, using service configuration tools, and troubleshooting problems). The authors introduce the RPM package management tool, then offer in-depth coverage of managing users.

Sysadmins will especially appreciate the detailed coverage of backup/recovery -- including a step-by-step walkthrough of using tar, along with detailed system rescue techniques.

You’ll find equally thorough coverage of Internet connectivity, including broadband access, routing, gateways, and firewalls. Ball and Duff thoroughly cover Internet and network services, too: SMTP, FTP, Apache, DNS, DHCP, NIS, NFS, Samba, IRC, ICQ, chat, even wireless networking.

There’s a full chapter on compatible Office productivity applications, from OpenOffice.org to fax clients and CD burning tools. Last but not least: detailed coverage of DOS, Windows, and Mac compatibility and interoperatibility.

That Fedora DVD we mentioned: it’s included. And if you don’t have a DVD drive, they’ve thoughtfully included the trimmed-down multi-CD Fedora “Publisher’s Edition,” too. What more could you possibly want? Bill Camarda
