Overview

The second book in Australian author Kylie Chan’s ingenious urban fantasy saga—a tale of  ancient gods and foul demons doing battle in the modern world—Red Phoenix combines Chinese mythology with martial arts, paranormal romance, and magic in a story that takes off like a rocket and never slows down.  The action moves from Hong Kong to Europe as heroine Emma Donahoe finds a demonic circle of death closing around her and the people she loves: the breathtaking and powerful god she is bound to and his innocent young daughter whom Emma has sworn to protect. Red Phoenix is gripping globe-trotting adventure, urban fantasy, and Kung Fu all rolled into one spectacular package that fans of Lilith Saintcrow, Liz Williams, Karen Chance, Devon Monk, and Ilona Andrews are going to flip over.

Emma Donahoe saw herself as ordinary until an extraordinary man came into her life and changed everything. She was hired on to be the nanny for John Chen's daughter not the wife of John, Xuan Wu, Dark Lord of the North, God of Martial Arts, and mightiest demon killer of all time. But she is engaged to the Lord and now everyone sees her as the Lady of the manor, a title she is not comfortable with or wants but will fulfill with grace and dignity. She has already shown her skills in battle after fighting off one evil Lord but the demons keep coming and soon she will have to lead John's army without him. John is losing his powers and must go to recharge but the length of time that takes to happen is unknown and Emma will become the Lady of the Manor. Emma can handle the pressure; rebuild John's army after suffering such horrific loss in the last battle; take responsibility to run his business; and fight any evil force trying to bring them pain. But can she survive without her soul mate John? She does view him as the love of her life, even though she cannot yet touch him but when they do unite, the heavens and earth will shake. Emma and John fight for their civilization, protect their families, and the hope to continue their existence. Taking in all manner of warriors and training them for the ultimate fight that is coming is nothing in comparison to when Emma's parents suddenly show up and no explanation is going to keep them happy. This is a complicated and detailed read that while not for everyone it is definitely for those of us that love the genre. There is so much going on but the reader never feels confused or overwhelmed by any of the action, which is nonstop. The number of pages may seem overwhelming but you need every one of them.

The Red Phoenix was definitely better than the first book in this series for two reasons. Kylie Chan gives the reader new, manageable plot elements (Emma's sister, Demon king's proposal, Emma's additional nightmares, Michael's relationship with Bai Hu) that greatly expand the direction in which the book can go. These additional sub-plots are all connected to the main story plot and the lives of the protagonists (Emma and John). This leads to the second reason why this book is better than the first. Chan's story-telling and overall prose improved with the second installment in the series. Bottom line: I read book two in only three sittings. It was hard to stop reading. I hope the third book is just as good. Thanks for a fast and fun read!

I have enjoyed reading this book and White Tiger (1st book in the series.) They are both full of twists and turns that keep readers on their toes while giving a glimpse into Chinese culture. I look forward to reading Blue Dragon!
