Overview

Raised on a ranch in northern California, Jody is well-schooled in the hard work and demands of a rancher's life. He is used to the way of horses, too; but nothing has prepared him for the special connection he will forge with Gabilan, a hot-tempered pony his father gives him. With Billy Buck, the hired hand, Jody tends and trains his horse, restlessly anticipating the moment he will sit high upon Gabilan's saddle. But when Gabilan falls ill, Jody discovers there are still lessons he must learn about the ways of nature and, particularly, the ways of man.

John Steinbeck
John Steinbeck
Chronicling American dreams destroyed by either injustice or the simple difficulty of the world, John Steinbeck left lasting testaments to the struggles of working people in The Grapes of Wrath and Cannery Row. His refusal to water down his realistic work got some of his books banned – and earned him a Nobel Prize.

Biography

John Ernst Steinbeck, Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner, was born in Salinas, California February 27, 1902. His father, John Steinbeck, served as Monterey County Treasurer for many years. His mother, Olive Hamilton, was a former schoolteacher who developed in him a love of literature. Young Steinbeck came to know the Salinas Valley well, working as a hired hand on nearby ranches in Monterey County. In 1919, he graduated from Salinas High School as president of his class and entered Stanford University majoring in English. Stanford did not claim his undivided attention. During this time he attended only sporadically while working at a variety jobs including on with the Big Sur highway project, and one at Spreckels Sugar Company near Salinas.

Steinbeck left Stanford permanently in 1925 to pursue a career in writing in New York City. He was unsuccessful and returned, disappointed, to California the following year. Though his first novel, Cup of Gold, was published in 1929, it attracted little literary attention. Two subsequent novels, The Pastures of Heaven and To A God Unknown, met the same fate.

After moving to the Monterey Peninsula in 1930, Steinbeck and his new wife, Carol Henning, made their home in Pacific Grove. Here, not far from famed Cannery Row, heart of the California sardine industry, Steinbeck found material he would later use for two more works, Tortilla Flat and Cannery Row.

With Tortilla Flat (1935), Steinbeck's career took a decidedly positive turn, receiving the California Commonwealth Club's Gold Medal. He felt encouraged to continue writing, relying on extensive research and personal observation of the human drama for his stories. In 1937, Of Mice and Men was published. Two years later, the novel was produced on Broadway and made into a movie. In 1940, Steinbeck won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for Grapes of Wrath, bringing to public attention the plight of dispossessed farmers.

After Steinbeck and Henning divorced in 1942, he married Gwyndolyn Conger. The couple moved to New York City and had two sons, Thomas and two years later, John. During the war years, Steinbeck served as a war correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune. Some of his dispatches reappeared in Once There Was A War. In 1945, Steinbeck published Cannery Row and continued to write prolifically, producing plays, short stories and film scripts. In 1950, he married Elaine Anderson Scott and they remained together until his death.

Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962 "...for his realistic as well as imaginative writings, distinguished by a sympathetic humor and keen social perception.." In his acceptance speech, Steinbeck summarized what he sought to achieve through his works:

"...Literature is as old as speech. It grew out of human need for it and it has not changed except to become more needed. The skalds, the bards, the writers are not separate and exclusive. From the beginning, their functions, their duties, their responsibilities have been decreed by our species...Further more, the writer is delegated to declare and to celebrate man's proven capacity of greatness of heart and spirit—gallantry in defeat, for courage, compassion and love. In the endless war against weakness and despair, these are the bright rally flags of hope and emulation. I hold that a writer who does not passionately believe in the perfectibility of man has no dedication nor any membership in literature..."

Steinbeck remained a private person, shunning publicity and moving frequently in his search for privacy. He died on December 20, 1968 in New York City, where he and his family made a home. But his final resting place was the valley he had written about with such passion. At his request, his ashes were interred in the Garden of Memories cemetery in Salinas. He is survived by his son, Thomas.

The Red Pony- Some books are great, this one isn't all that special

The Red Pony is a dark and intense novel by John Steinbeck. The theme of the book is learning from mistakes and finding that the outcome of an event won't always be what you want. The main protagonist, Jodie must learn from his fault and discover how to cope with the sorrow and pain of a loved one. The author primarily uses foreshadowing to portray events that you know will happen, but don't expect them to occur a certain way. Overall, I would say that The Red Pony was rather a let down. I didn't truly dislike the book; it's more of the fact that I was disappointed. The story starts off fine, but then leisurely loses its pace.

Worst Book I Have Ever Read

I am a fan of John Steinbeck, but this fiasco could not even be called a book, and barely a story. It was more like a disjointed part of a book. The red pony died, then the black colt was born and never mentioned again. The old Indian rode off on Easter, never to be heard of again, and Grandpa came but the story stopped there. If this book could have been given less then one star, I would have given it that in a heartbeat. Why this story is deemed a classic is beyond me, and I would hope teachers in America would move onto some of the better more deserving classics. This was simply a waste.

    Book Review Outline
Book title and author: The Red Pony; John Stienbeck
Title of review: Could be Better
    Number of stars (1 to 5): 2

    Introduction
The Red Pony Is about a boy who wants a pony but the pony is hard to come by. The boys name is Jody.
Description and summary of main points
Jody wants a pony, but the pony wasn't the easiest thing in the world to possess with the Indians and the money to.
    Evaluation
To my opinion the book was horrible but that's my choice. If you liked the book well I guess you like heart-breakers. I personally do not like how the pony died, that just didn't follow the plot. Well the story didn't have much of a plot but your know what I mean.
    Conclusion
When the pony dies I just didn't get why. I mean the boy wanted the pony so let it live. Now you see why I don't think the story followed a plot.
    Your final review

Overall I think the story jus needs to be better from cover to cover.

    Ok

The title of the book I read was The Red Pony. John Steinbeck was the author of this book. The title represents the pony that Jody, the main character, first got. The story takes place in California after the U.S. has been explored to its fullest. Jody is the Protagonists because he wants to do what the story is about. The antagonist is Jody's father because he doesn't want Jody to have a horse. The characters are both believable and interesting. The main point of the book was Jody getting his horse than it dying. Rising action was the pony being born the climax was the second pony being born.
The style of the book was third person because the narrator wasn't in the story. The theme of the book was even when it's hard you should keep on trying. I liked this book and recommend this to anyone with free time on their hands.

    A new Genre of Book

Book title and author: The Red Pony by John Steinbeck
Title of review: A new Genre of Book

Well, obviously since the title is The Red Pony you have to get an idea of what it is about. The story is pretty much about the coming age of a boy who has several horses by his side during the process of growing up. This author's purpose was to get the message out that life goes fast. This book is an average book that gives a good message about life. Overall, this book is a young adult book.
John Steinbeck is a Nobel Prize winning author. He wrote the great book, The Grapes of Wrath. I would like to let you know before I go into any harsh detail about this book that might enrage you I am basing this book off suspense and energy. This book describes how harsh things were a long time ago. For example the father yells at the kid a lot. One time he said, "Get out Mr. Big Britches, go on, get out," and the boy didn't even do anything.
This book is strong on one thing- realism. It vividly describes or gives you a good idea of what life was like back then. It makes it even harder living in the wild west. There are minor of the book where it is suspenseful. If you're looking for an edge of your seat book, this is not it. If you're looking for a book that has hardships and rough times, this book is the one for you. This book lives up to standards in different ways. Books in this genre are pretty much similar to this book.
This book is a good book and will not waste your time. Out of all this madness this book is slightly above average. This book will make you happy at some point. In others it will just be a downer. Again this book is realistic just like other books in its genre.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was a good expierence. It might've been different but still good. This made me think, what would I have been like if I lived back then. I hope this review was usefl to you and it helped you make your decision.

    I Also Recommend:

    Not that great

I was really disapointed with this book, considering it was written by IMHO one of the greatest authors of our time. The plot wasn't good, and the ending was very abrupt. It's a short read though so pick it up for yourself, you might like it.

    I know horses

The Red Pony is one of those book that stands out for me because I know horses. My mom has a horse named Missy that is very much like Galiban and every time I go there I try to break her, but to little avail. This book tells the reader that even though you put much into something, it may later amount to nothing. I think that this concept actually strengthens a person to do even better next time.

The Red Pony Not That Great

I personally didnt like The Red Pony that much it was mostley a repeating story and not recomended for children too much gore scenes. The thing I most liked was the the relationship he ended up having in the end and the things he sorta learned, bu other than that it was a pretty boaring story.

    HORRIBLE.

Yet again, Steinbeck has written another horrible book. Why this is called a classic I have no idea. Last year I read The Pearl, and I thought a book couldn't get any worse, but the fact that this book had absolutely no plot and the story line didn't carry anywhere absolutely ruined it for me. Simply put, I am not a big fan of Steinbeck.

    The red pony, not great

What would you do if the one thing that was positive in your life, something that you gave a lot of time and care to died? This is what happened to Jody in The Red Pony. John Steinbeck writes about a boy, Jody, who lives and is growing up on a ranch in California. In The Red Pony, Jody learns the ways of life, stemming from the death of the much beloved Gabilan, the red pony, his first substantial misfortune in the story. With the Guidance from Billy Buck, the ranch hand support from his mother and some emotional neglect from his father, Jody continues to learn how the world works as he blossoms into a well-rounded individual. The Red Pony was often times very monotonous and was not attention grabbing but the book as a whole evokes a feeling of happiness as Jody slowly grows up into a young man.

    Important lesson

This book is important since it teaches children that animals aren't just for food and work but they can also be pets and gain your love whether you like it or not. Then when you loose the pet you hurt and grieve, and that is the lesson. If this can happen to a hardened farm boy who sees animals as nothing more than working machines that need to be fed, then it can happen to anyone.

    Interest Subjective to Age

My experience with this book was an enjoyable one, but I think that The Red Pony is a strictly coming-of-age book: it contains many subtleties relating to this topic so that one may not appreciate the finer details of this book if they were not...well, coming of age. I found that Steinbeck flawlessly captured the feeling one gets when they discover that the adult they idolize is not totally infallible.

The effect of death on humans

Steinbeck sets this story about the impact on a boy named Jody and his family of the death of a special pony(Gabilan) on a ranch in the American West.Jodies initial view of the Gabilan is that this pony is just like any other pony or object. He soon discovers that the Gabilan is special. He falls in love with this particular pony.He thinks of all the possibilities that could occur in the future.Unexpectedly, the pony becomes sick and dies. These eventstake place in the first third of the story. The last two thirds of the book are concerned with the repercussions and impact that the death of the pony has on the parents,Jody, and the hired hand,Billy Buck. The important role that human emotional responses play in human lives is dealt with.Jody, mother, and Billy Buck find that their lives(the meaning of life)have been changed and altered by the life and death of the pony. The father's response is to just go out and buy the son another horse(one horse is just as good as any other). The result of these different emotional responses is that the mother, son, and hired hand grow closer together while the father gradually becomes isolated if not estranged. The author succeeds in covering the ups and downs of the cycle of life from birth(or first meeting with the horse)through life, death, and rebirth effects the emotions of humans and changes them, for better or worse.I thought the book was ok but felt that the special pony should have been in the story for about 30-40 more pages. The only other additional impact in the story on Jody is the grandfather's overall knowledge of the problems of life. Jody is affected by the stories that his grandfather tells him. However they don't have anywhere near the impact on his development that the red pony had. Neither did the new colt really.
