Overview

"Allah!"

With that shrill cry, three Muslim terrorists blow up a key Soviet oil complex, creating a critical oil shortage that threatens the stability of the USSR.

To offer the effects of this disaster, members of the Politburo and the KGB devise a brilliant plan of diplomatic trickery - a sequence of events designed to pit the NATO allies against each other - a distraction calculated to enable the Soviets to seize all the oil in the Persian Gulf.

But as this spellbinding story of international intrigue and global politics nears its climax, the Soviets are faced with another prospect, one they hadn't planned on: a full-scale conflict in which nobody can win.

From the author of The Hunt For Red October, a New York Times bestseller for over 40 weeks, comes his greatest performance yet. Red Storm Rising is an alarmingly authentic portrait of escalating aggression between superpowers on all fronts--land, sea, air and space.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A second contemporary international thriller from the author of The Hunt for Red October. One of Russia's biggest oil refineries is destroyed by a Muslim terrorist group. Facing an oil shortage that would leave their country open to economic and political disasters, the Russian leaders decide to seize the oil in the Persian Gulf. They instigate a ground war that surprises NATO and the U.S. and threatens to eliminate them as political and military forces in Europe. This long, long novel is a detailed chronicle of the air, sea, and land battles that erupt as a result of ``Red Storm''the Russian plan of attack. The Russians are clearly the bad guys herefrequently frightened, inept, or evil. The Americans are always the heroic victims of unjustified aggression or the smooth skilled winners. Frighteningly realistic. Polished. Technical. Primarily for military novel buffs. Jean B. Palmer, Phillips Acad. Lib., Andover, Mass.
From The Critics
YA Red Storm Rising, a World War III novel, begins in a blazing oil field in Russia, plunging readers into a gripping story of plots, strategies, wise men, and idiots that winds the tension ever tighter. Vivid characters emerge through the chaos of battles planned and fought. Sacrifices, heroes, great strategy confounded by bad weather, lack of supplies, and incomplete information draw readers into the adventure and the suspense of reversals. No Rambos herethe heroes are ordinary young people caught by chance on the turning edge of war. Sheer grit and perserverance turn the tide in this chilling, fleshed-out war game. Readers emerge elated and breathless, with a new vision of war and its wins and losses. Clancy will win an army of fans who will be looking for more. Annette DeMeritt, Houston Public Library

Meet the Author

Tom Clancy
Tom Clancy
By the time you are finished reading this, it is likely that Tom Clancy will have written yet another bestseller. One of our most prolific writers is also one of the most celebrated and well-known in America -- so much so that his thrillers have won fans in the White House and he is often asked his opinion of political and military matters. Having written an astounding 26 books in 20 years -- each one a bestseller -- Clancy shows no signs of slowing down or pulling punches when it comes to his own stance on the kind of contemporary issues he has been addressing in his books for two decades.

Ever since Clancy's first novel, The Hunt For Red October, rocked the publishing world upon its publication in 1984, winning a fan in President Ronald Reagan, Clancy has proved himself to be an indomitable literary force. While Clancy is best known for the techno-thriller genre he is credited with creating and the hard-boiled adventures of President Jack Ryan, he has also penned several works of non-fiction examining various aspects of the U.S. military, such as Submarine: A Guided Tour Inside a Nuclear Warship, Armored CAV: A Guided Tour of an Armored Cavalry Regiment, and Airborne: A Guided Tour of an Airborne Task Force.

Clancy has also co-written several of his studies with military personnel. These entries in his "Commander" series include Into the Storm: A Study in Command, written with armor and infantry General Fred Franks, and Every Man a Tiger with Air Force General Chuck Horner. The most recent installment in the series is a collaboration with Major General Tom Zinni, who served as former Secretary of State Colin Powell's special envoy to the Middle East before his opinions about the Iraqi War lead to his early resignation. In Battle Ready, Clancy tracks Zinni's long and prestigious military career, from his stint in Vietnam to his days directing strikes against Iraq and Al Qaeda. Clancy spins Zinni's tale into a masterful blend of biography, military history, and compelling narrative, with a particular focus on an often-unexamined aspect of our military leaders. "In the movies, military leaders are all drunken Nazis," Clancy told the Associated Press of Battle Ready, "In fact, these are very bright people who regard the soldiers and Marines under them as their own kids. I thought the people needed to know that. These are good guys, smart guys."

Battle Ready makes some inroads in presenting the more human side of the military leaders who are so often illustrated as callous war mongers in the media. Zinni's unflinching and often inflammatory criticisms of U.S. foreign policy provide the book with its powerful moral center, inspiring George Cohen of Booklist to assert, "...this is a book that demands our attention."

As for Clancy's own stance on U.S. involvement in Iraq, he is somewhat less rabble-rousing than Zinni, but no less candid. And on one occasion, Clancy claims he almost came to blows with former Pentagon adviser Richard Perle on the matter. "He was saying how Colin Powell was being a wuss because he was overly concerned with the lives of the troops," Clancy explained, "And I said, ‘Look -- he's supposed to think that way!' And Perle didn't agree with me on that. People like that worry me."

As for what the ever-prolific Tom Clancy has in the works next, he would only say, when asked what his Jack Ryan would have to say about the war, "I don't like to comment on works in progress." With a new book slotted for a 2006 release, Clancy's provocative comment may suggest that the controversy has only just begun to brew.

Biography

Thirty years ago Tom Clancy was a Maryland insurance broker with a passion for naval history. Years before, he had been an English major at Baltimore’s Loyola College and had always dreamed of writing a novel. His first effort, The Hunt for Red October, sold briskly as a result of rave reviews, then catapulted onto the New York Times bestseller list after President Reagan pronounced it “the perfect yarn.” Since then Clancy has established himself as an undisputed master at blending exceptional realism and authenticity, intricate plotting, and razor-sharp suspense.

Good To Know

Tom Clancy's world is not all serious political intrigue -- it is occasionally fun and games. Clancy founded Red Storm Entertainment, a video game company responsible for such titles as "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon" and "Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six." Clancy recently sold the company for a whopping $45 million.

While Tom Clancy is widely considered to be an authority on all things military, he has never actually served in the military. His failure to pass the eye exam kept him out of action.

Clancy's government connections are not limited to his politically-charged stories; his wife Alexandra is the niece of former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Finest of Mr. Clancy's non-Jack Ryan novels

The title says it all, with the exception of his Jack Ryan novels, I'm including "The Bear and the Dragon" with those. This is his finest novel. Even nearly 25 years later, this story still rings true to what's happening today. Other than the USSR, one could easily replace "USSR" with "Russia" and this could happen next week. A must read for any Tom Clancy fan, or Larry Bond, Dale Brown, or any of the other Military thriller novelists. This book deserves a permanent place in your libraries.

    I Also Recommend:

Reading this book for the second time -

I read this novel while serving a few years after it was published. I worked in one the the primary rates that the story focuses on. Found Clancy's understanding of the overall dynamics of the cold war frightening. I could not put this book down until I was done. It was read by most of my division and by the time I got it back, it was in tatters...but everyone loved it. This was his second book and I think it really put him on the map for a lot of readers. His first book, Hunt for Red October was great, but limited in scope to primarily ASW. This novel showed that his mind was keen to an overall picture that was poised to happen for 40 years. Younger readers might have a tough time understanding some of the "how could this happen" as the Soviet Union has been dissolved for a while. The world was living in the intrigue of the of the first few chapters for most of the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's. This novel could be thought of as a history lesson based on a fictional line of events. It was that close...great read, and it is out as an Ebook for my Nook as well!

    An Examination of Modern Warfare

Here's a surprise: another great book from Tom Clancy. It is one of only two novels that are not part of a series. In general, the book is a world war three scenario in which the Cold War becomes hot. It starts when the Soviet Union begins a massive assault on Eastern Europe due to dwindling oil reserves. They quickly take much of Germany as well as Keflavik, Iceland. Despite the ferocious attack, it quickly settles into a war of attrition. Each side has underestimated the amount of supplies needed and it is a race to re-supply their militaries. This becomes increasingly difficult for NATO due to Soviet air attacks based out of Keflavik. Eventually the Soviet Commander-in-chief (Western Front) realizes the Politburo was wrong in starting the war. He begins to doubt the USSR's leadership (Beyond that you'll have to read the book for yourself!). There are several sub-plots ranging in location from Iceland to Germany and the Sea of Okhostk. They start off separately but eventually intertwine to create an explosive ending. Tom Clancy uses this novel to demonstrate the fact that many conventional ideas about warfare are exceedingly incorrect. He states that in a major conflict, munitions usage is much higher than projected. He also presents the idea that fast attack helicopters (Such as the AH-1 Cobra and MI-24 Hind) are too lightly armored and ineffective in a ground conflict. One of Clancy's most notable achievements in this book is the intertwining of numerous sub-plots to express how modern warfare is multi-faceted. He utilizes several main characters (Such as Lt. Edwards (USAF) and General Pavel Leonidovich Alekseyev) from each side and all from differing perspectives to show the true nature of war. As usual, Clancy uses his one-of-a-kind writing style to convey the emotions of the characters. It is especially effective in Lt. Edwards story. However, despite Tom Clancy's incredible talent, there is perhaps too much of a focus on submarine warfare. The overuse of this aspect can take away from the novel's overall effect, as they become dull and boring later on in the book. Overall, Red Storm Rising is perhaps one of Clancy's greatest novels, especially of those dealing with the Cold War. It deals with all major issues surrounding modern warfare, and causes the reader to wonder if NATO is as well prepared for war as they would like us to believe. If you are a fan of Tom Clancy, this book is most definitely a must-read.

    Excellent Book

Red Storm Rising is the best book I have ever read. I have never read a Tom Clancy book before, and I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Clancy series. The writting is superb. Clancy describes everything perfectly. You will find your self wanting to know more about each character and later on you do. This book is about a war between NATO and the Soviet Union. And Clancy intertwines the stories of several characters throughout the war. You will follow a Russian politician, Air Force lieutenant, Navy Commander, Russian General, and many more. Clancy makes it easy to get to know each character and transitions from each story very well throughout the novel. There are many action packed chapters as well as political chapters and they compliment each other well with a perfect balance. It would be good to have some basic military knowledge before reading this. Very great story Tom Clancy! I wish this book never ended, I want more! Red Storm Rising

    Been there didn't do that

I was stationed there for nine years. Spent time in all those towns and in some of the forests. This book really brings home what it would have been like if it had really happened. The feel and taste of combat in the FRG was real with no holds barred. Best read ever.

    Great Story!

You can read the synopsis to get an idea of story line. This book is a great story and was written during the Cold War when we really feared the "Red Storm". The editing of this book could use some work, having read both hard copy and ebook versions, there seems to be a lot of spelling errors in the ebook version.

read this when it first hit the shelves

This is an excellent book - I've given this book much thought over the last 2-3 years when I think of our present situation as our military is scattered in so many places - in 1986 when the book came out, it was a very scary scenerio - now in 2007, I really think about the scenerio. But one thing is for sure - it IS a very long book and once you start it, its so intense that you can't put it down.
