Overview

They are odd. Maddy Phillips, sightless and paraplegic, is a distinguished psychologist specializing in forensic hypnosis. Her brother, Alex, probes the world beyond Maddy's island estate. And together they prove to be crime fiction's most unique and fascinating detective team: when Alex witnesses a crime, he retreats to Maddy's island where, under her powerful hypnotic trance, he retells in startling detail the horrible events. Their previous adventures have won widespread critical acclaim and numerous fans. Now, in this third very original appearance, Maddy dispatches Alex on a strange and ultimately life-threatening visit to St. Petersburg, Russia, where he encounters the mysterious hypnotist, Dr. Pavel Kamikov. The new Russia, Alex discovers, is layered with greed and lies, and Dr. Kamikov proves no different. Just how in Russia's difficult times has this man become so wealthy? Has he really made that much money from his popular TV show, Mesmerizing Moments, or is he involved in an illegal business? To muddy the scene even further, almost as soon as Alex arrives in St. Petersburg, an old friend of his is gunned down while changing dollars on the black market - an event that sweeps Alex into the new, ruthless Russia now dominated by the all-powerful Russian mafia. Filled with details of post-Soviet Russia, Red Trance charges through the dark alleys of St. Petersburg and pits Alex's life against a handful of thugs. In the very end, however, after a gruesome murder in a dark stairwell and Alex's own arrest by the Russian police, only one person is able to identify the awful truth: Maddy. Deep in hypnotic trance, the uniquely powerful and blind Maddy visualizes the scene of the crime, revealing the real course of events.

The shot rang out and Pavel Kamikov plunged to his death. Through a gas haze, Alex Phillips watched in horror as Russia's top hypnotherapist and TV personality ends his career as a capitalist in the New Russia in a blur of bullets. Who killed Pavel--only Alex knows. And Maddy, a blind forensic hypnotherapist, is determined to coax the killer from Alex's unconscious mind.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
From an island in northern Lake Michigan, a blind, paraplegic psychologist directs her hypnotized brother back through a recent trip to Moscow to solve murders he witnessed there. Improbable as Maddy and Alex Phillips may seem, Zimmerman ( Blood Trance ) gives his sleuthing siblings a kind of truth-is-stranger-than-fiction credibility, but the story is sabotaged by Alex's one-note narration (he's always frantic) and his failure to understand that his Russian friends, students when he last saw them, might set a different value on his friendship in post-Soviet society. Economic realities mix with surreal elements as Alex, in a trance, revisits the shooting death of his friend Lev and puzzles over the response of Lev's wife Tanya. Also figuring in Alex's vision are mafia figures, a widely popular TV hypnotist--an e-mail friend of Maddy's--and a shadowy figure, unidentified until the last pages. The reasons for, and perpetrators of, a stabbing and another shooting further bedevil Alex until his sister, with the erotically tinged influence she has over him, convinces him to face the truth. Biography

A devoted Russophile, Robert Alexander has studied at Leningrad State University, worked for the U.S. government, and traveled extensively throughout Russia. While he's already made a name for himself with his series of bestselling mysteries (written as R. D. Zimmerman), he has also written a well-received trilogy of Russian historical novels (The Kitchen Boy, Rasputin's Daughter, The Romanov Bride) about the last days of Empire.

Good To Know

In our interview, Alexander shared some fun and fascinating facts about himself with us:

"Most of my friends know: I'm much too outgoing to be living in quarantine, as I do (as any writer does). Most of my friends don't know: I can ride a unicycle, I can't balance my checkbook, I broke my back going over a ski jump, and I was once enrolled in Meats 104 and Beverage 111 at a prominent School of Hotel and Restaurants, which prompted me to drop out and start my first novel."

"What I would like to know about me from someone is, why do I keep going to Russia? I've been going there for 28 years, and it's definitely not a place to unwind. But it certainly is always interesting. And that's where I met my domestic partner, Lars, and we've now been together 25 years. And it's also where I met my business partner, Meri, and we've been in business now almost 14 years -- we have a customs clearance business and Barabu, a small chain of espresso/wine bars. And I always come up with some weird story idea over there. So maybe I just answered my own question.
