It may be summertime, but sales at Fairy Tale Cupcakes are below zero--and owners Melanie Cooper and Angie DeLaura are willing to try anything to heat things up. So when local legend Slim Hazard offers them the chance to sell cupcakes at the annual Juniper Pass rodeo, they're determined to rope in a pretty payday!

But not everyone at the Juniper Pass is as sweet for Fairy Tale Cupcakes as Slim--including star bull-rider Ty Stokes. Mel and Angie try to steer clear of the cowboy's short fuse, but when his dead body is found face down in the hay, it's a whole different rodeo.

With a vengeful murderer on the loose, the ladies are quickly realizing that while they came to save their business, they may have to save themselves--and that's no bull.

Slow Start Baked into this Entry I intended to get back to Jenn McKinley’s Cupcake Bakery mysteries a couple of months ago, but I have just had too many books calling my name. I finally made the time to read Red Velvet Revenge. I found the mystery a little slow to get off the ground, but I enjoyed it overall. The heat in Scottsdale, Arizona, in the summer has killed business for Fairy Tale Cupcakes since everyone is looking for cool treats. So when Mel and Angie are offered a chance to provide cupcakes for a rodeo up in the mountains, they figure this is their chance to earn some money and escape the heat themselves. They’ve got just the platform to do it, too, since their employee Oz has just inherited a van he wants them to use in the business. With their employees tagging along for the ride, Mel and Angie show up just in time for the parade that starts the rodeo. However, before the parade is over, someone is shot. Have they escaped the heat only to land in hot water? The book takes too much time setting up the new van and how the characters get this job, so we are over a quarter into the story before anything really begins to get started. I’m not saying I didn’t enjoy the set up, but it really could have been handled with a few paragraphs of exposition and not hurt the book. Even if we do want to get into the van problems, that portion could have been cut down significantly. However, once the mystery starts, things definitely pick up. There are plenty of reasons for our characters to get involved, and the clues and plot points come very quickly. I’ve really gotten to love these characters, so that helped with the early part of the book since I enjoyed the updates we got on them. Since the book takes place away from the normal setting, a few of the supporting characters aren’t around as much, and I did miss them. However, I was thrilled to see the return of Marty, who was introduced in the second book. It appears that an ongoing sub-plot between a couple of the characters took a huge step toward being resolved, but I’ll have to read the next book to find out for sure. Now that’s not to take away from the new characters we meet here. They are all strong and very charming as well. In fact, that lead me to dread the climax. I just knew that when the killer was unmasked, I was going to be very upset by whoever it was. And sure enough, I found myself tearing up for these new characters as I read the final scenes – that’s just how strong they were. There’s a healthy dash of humor as well, mostly coming from the regular characters. I laughed several times as I read, and I was grinning most of the time. Of course, there are four delicious sounding recipes in the back, including some vegan cupcake options, cake pops, and a French toast cupcake. Despite the slow start, I really did enjoy Red Velvet Revenge. I’m definitely hoping I can get in for a return visit very soon.

I think this is my other favorite book in the series so far. This was just too good. And I want to see more of backbone Mel Cooper because I loved how she talked some sense into her two friends and their romance angst. And I like how protective Mel is of Oz, that's just adorable. And we get more Marty as well, which is nice, since he along with Oz are a good addition to the series. Anyway, this time around, the cupcake gang head to the rodeo. I like how in the series you have some characters you like and some you don't. But at the same time, you're guessing along with Mel and co on whose the killer. It makes it all the more fun to read that way. That's what I like about these cozy mysteries, along with the characters as well. Also that cover there looks delicious. Plus, the ending, how could you end it there and leave me smiling. Well now I want the next book already. Looking forward to the next one.

I enjoyed the other books in this series a lot better than this one. It wasn't bad but it was just not up to par with the rest. Im not sure what but something was missing. The usual charm that the characters usually have just wasn't there for me with this read.

Jen McKinlay includes local geography in her books and this book has a unique setting! Her characters are real and identifiable with a range of ages and interests. I could not predict who the killer would be in this book. She gives you many possibilities that included a surprise at the end. Great story!

While I was asked to review the first 4 of these, I thought I would just review the last one as I would write the same thing about them all---great reading. I am a big fan of many authors such as Clive Cussler, Robert Crais, etc. and it is so good to have an author like Jenn McKinlay with books like this that can keep you interested with a lighter reading to mix in with the more intricate type like the above. Her Cupcake Bakery Mystery books are so delightful and once you start reading one, you hate to put it down because you really want to find out "who dun it". They're the kind of book that you don't have to worry if one of your kids would happen to pick up and start to read either--great interest holding book for anyone.

The cupcake business is slow so the trio head to Juniper Pass with Marty and Oz and trouble follows Mel and Angie when their host is wounded and they both find a dead body. What ensues in this fast-paced and action-filled whodunit is a delightfully appealing adventure that kept me entertained. Boasting a wonderfully crafted plot, a mystery that I could not put down and lovable characters, this is the best one yet in a series that continues to stand out. A fun and humorous read, I look forward to the next exciting times with the team at Fairy Tale Cupcakes.
