Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-A simple, rhymed text and a relentless riot of red, white, and blue attempt to explain the American flag to young children. The author addresses concepts such as sacrifice, loyalty, pride, the pledge of allegiance, First Amendment rights, and the various names of the flag. The abstract ideas, however, are not made any clearer through the fabric illustrations; the compositions depict children parading with flags and key phrases rendered in homespun stitchery, and they lack distinction. Each spread features two scenes and a common patriotic border; the busy effect is reminiscent of current scrapbook techniques. For more age-appropriate explanations and better book designs, try Pam Mu-oz Ryan's The Flag We Love (Charlesbridge, 1996), The Pledge of Allegiance (Scholastic, 2000), and Bill Martin Jr. and Michael Sampson's I Pledge Allegiance (Candlewick, 2002).-Wendy Lukehart, Washington DC Public Library Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
