Praise for At the Beach:
“Lee’s mellow-hued collages feature a multicultural crowd of beach goers, while elaborate cut-outs grace the borders, echoing the fluid line of the Chinese characters. It’s a remarkably unified effort: everything works together to create a flawless picture book.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review
Praise for In the Snow:
“As the characters begin to build on one another, children will be able to see and appreciate the pictorial nature of Chinese writing. . . . The textured paper, vibrant winter clothing, animals in their fur and feathers, and snowflake-decorated colored borders create a lively atmosphere for this memorable lesson in Chinese writing.” —Booklist

Children's Literature - Mary Hynes-Berry
All the classic ways Americans celebrate the birthday of our country are evoked in this lively picture book. The text is minimal and telegraphic, done as short rhyming couplets: "Flags unfurl/, batons twirl/ Bugles call/ Marchers tall." While terms like "unfurl" or the elliptical syntax of "marchers tall" might give pause to English language learners, Lee's collages, dominated by tones of red, white and blue dominate each page and make the meaning clear. In fact, there is a good one-to-one correspondence between the text and the pictures in each spread along with all kinds of details young children will be delighted to talk through and relate to their own experiences. At the same time, every page includes a rainbow of ethnic heritages, underscoring the message that this country is everyone's home of the brave and land of the free. Reviewer: Mary Hynes-Berry
School Library Journal
Gr 1—Independence Day is brought to jubilant life in this striking picture book. Three familiar Fourth of July celebrations—a city parade, a beach picnic, and fireworks in the park—are described in simple, rhyming language rich in sensory imagery: "Flags unfurl/batons twirl….Castle moats/Seaweed boats….Corncob sweet/Drippy treat….Rockets wing/Crackle, sing/Burst and zoom/Red, white, boom!" Rich in texture and beautiful patterns, the intricate cut-paper collages depict a multicultural, multigenerational mosaic of people who gather in various ways to commemorate our nation's founding freedoms. Children will enjoy following the numerous unnamed characters' movements from one busy scene to the next. Paired with Donald Crews's well-loved Parade (Greenwillow, 1983), this title is made to order for the summer storyhour crowd as well as quiet lapsits under a shady tree.—Kathleen Finn, St. Francis Xavier School, Winooski, VT
