Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This lyrical prose poem follows a pair of red wolves as they cross the boundary between seasons, from the icy fringe of winter into spring (when ``the sounds of birds and bees tremble in the air''). More direct and less metaphorical than London's The Eyes of Gray Wolf, this narrative embraces humor (the wolves mistakenly stalk a skunk), danger (a farmer's bullet barely misses the female) and suspense (what is She-Wolf's secret that ``grows and grows''?). As is characteristic of many London books, the text emerges from facts about endangered animals: in 1980, the red wolf was extinct in the wild; today, after the reintroduction of captive pairs in eastern North Carolina, nearly 100 wolves roam free. San Souci's elegant, full-spread watercolors track the text through varied light and landscapes-producing perhaps the most compatible collaboration yet in London's series of wildlife tales. Ages 3-6. Children's Literature - Gisela Jernigan
Beautiful, evocative watercolors and a brief, poetic text introduce us to the world of the endangered red wolf, which disappeared from the wild in 1980. It has been reintroduced in selected areas of its original habitat in the Southeast United States and is making a comeback. Through well integrated pictures and text, we follow a red wolf couple through a winter of hunting and avoiding an angry farmer; spring, which is when the she-wolf gives birth, and a summer of caring for the four new pups. An afterword provides more information on the history and present status of this endangered animal.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 4-Breathtaking paintings and a dramatic text make this wildlife adventure a real stand-out. Two red wolves move silently through their coastal wetlands habitat. They stalk a small animal across a frozen marsh, only to be startled by a fearless skunk. There is danger everywhere: a barking dog in a quiet house, a nervous farmer and his rifle, a pair of alligators searching the river for food. Finally, the mates find safety high in the hills, far from civilization. As the weather warms, they settle into a comfortable den, and with spring comes a litter of pups. London's staccato text moves the action along at a swift pace. The third-person narrative describes the events in simple, effective language, allowing the silent wolves to retain an aura of mystery and dignity. As the story unfolds, readers are pulled into their powerful struggle for survival. San Souci's striking watercolors capture the beauty of these shimmering animals and the splendor of their habitat. Posed against a twilight sky, running across a snow-covered landscape, or chasing a butterfly in a blooming meadow, they are portrayed with lifelike detail and vitality. An afterword describes their extinction in the wild and the successful release of captivity-bred red wolves in the southeastern United States. A stunning success.-Joy Fleishhacker, New York Public Library

She-Wolf has a secret. As she roams with her mate through the snowy winter from the coastal wetlands high into the hills, they search for a place to make a den. Once they come too close to a farmhouse and narrowly escape a nervous farmer's rifle. When spring breaks, they are far from the land of man, and the secret is revealed: their cubs are born ("Fuzzy and blind / cuddly-warm balls of fur / nuzzling, hungry for life" ). London's simple free verse and San Souci's handsome double-page-spread paintings tell of a wildlife journey that will excite kids with its physical reality. An afterword adds a poignant note about the precariousness of these creatures who have been extinct in the wild since 1980 and are now being brought back to the territory where they once roamed free.
