Editorial Reviews

Booklist
In the fourth book of the football series that began with Kickoff (2007), the Eagles junior-high team
struggles through the playoffs as the players battle their community’s high expectations as well as chicken pox. Twins Tiki and Ronde each miss a game, but team members step up when the Eagles take the field, eventually playing in the state championship. Like the earlier books, this one emphasizes good values and teamwork on and off the field, but readers who come to the book looking for play-by-play football action will find plenty here, beginning with Kadir Nelson’s cover illustration.
From the Publisher
Tiki and Ronde are eighth graders hoping for a run to the state championships. However, football fever has hit Hidden Valley Junior High School—literally, in the form of chicken pox—and when players start coming down with the pox, Tiki and Ronde fear the worst: If they get sick, what will the team do without its best athletes? Along with the usual sports messages of teamwork, hard work, keeping the faith, dreams and picking yourself up when you don’t succeed, the novel adds didacticism and narcissism to the mix. Still, lots of football action, an exuberant use of exclamation points and a plot that runs like a footrace for the end zone will keep credulous young readers flying through the pages.

Children's Literature - Jeanna Potts
Can the Hidden Valley Junior High School football team win the Virginia state championship without their starting players? Tiki and Ronde Barber, twin brothers, are two of the teams’ best players. Tiki plays offense and Ronde plays quarterback. As the team begins the district competition, they are beset by an outbreak of chicken pox. John Berra, the fullback, is the first player to have chicken pox; fortunately, the Eagles are able to win the game with the smaller substitute player. For the next game, the safety player and his substitute both have chicken pox and are unable to play. Ronde must switch to that position, although he has never played it before. He does a great job, and the Eagles win the game. Defensive Sam Scarfone gets chicken pox next, and then Tiki discovers he has chicken pox. Tiki is disappointed and tries to create a miracle recovery by covering his spots with his mother’s makeup. He misses the final district game. The Eagles win and advance to the state level. Ronde is the next victim, and it looks like he is going to miss the final game. Then, an ice storm delays the final game, giving Ronde the extra day he needs to recover. His mother drives him to the game, and he arrives just in time to play. The story realistically presents the excitement and enthusiasm of young athletes, and it is especially interesting because Tiki and Ronde Barber are real people who are National League Football players. To help readers understand the sport, diagrams depict the standard offense and defense plays at the back of the book. At the beginning of book is a Hidden Valley Junior High School team roster and the conference schedule, which help readers follow along. Reviewer: Jeanna Potts; Ages 8 to 12.
