Within the pages of Redeeming the Thummim, readers will discover a breathtaking and mesmerizing storyline. Every page moves the story forward at an extremely fast pace, making this children's book difficult to put aside-even for a short time. Whether readers are captivated by the two young boys and a girl, teachers and rabbis, a stuffed panda, pointed grubs, giant ants with horns, evil Cabalists, or other beings; all are vividly described and depicted. In the first chapter we meet Micah, a young Jewish boy whose father is suffering from severe heart problems. Soon he is joined by Josiah, his best friend, who attends a Hebrew school with him. Though eleven, Josiah carries a stuffed panda named Daniel with him at all times. Perhaps this is because he is an orphan growing up in a home for children or occasionally being sent to foster homes. Micah wants Josiah with him on a special mission, but not Doris who is a year older than the boys. Though she insists on tagging along, the boys consider her a pest. What is this special mission? Micah is determined to find the Thummim, the healing stone that his father had told him about. If he does, because of his faith and a dream, he is convinced his father will be healed, literally snatched from death. And so, not far from home, he would supernaturally enter a cave through a half-inch crack in a cliff wall. His friends would follow, and all three children would begin the adventure of their lives! They would face danger and death in a mystical world where deception, darkness and the Great Serpent awaited them. More than once, Micah prayed to the God of Israel-he had to find the sacred cavern and the Thummim, regardless of what it took. Had he known the cost in advance, would the outcome have been any different? From one page to the next, there are surprises and mysteries that will keep readers asking, "What's next?" It seems impossible for the three children to determine who could be trusted-even among the rabbis. Will the seemingly endless maze of tunnels ever lead them to the Light that Micah had seen in his dream? This reviewer was surprised by the role of the panda and Josiah in the unfolding drama. This book is easy to read and age-appropriate for the intended audience. For those of you who want to know if the children return home safely with the Thummim, I suggest you purchase Redeeming the Thummim to resolve this question and others you might have after reading this review. It carries my highest recommendation.
