It took Jane several seconds to get her bearings as she stared incredulously at Kit.

“I figured you’d be surprised to see me,” Kit said, closing the door. Jane attempted to sort out the scene in silence. Kit looked down and saw the handheld phone Jane had thrown in anger. She picked it up and placed it on Jane’s desk. “That must have been what I heard hit the door.” Kit dropped her tapestry satchel against the lone chair reserved for clients. “Your face looks much better. I told you that Arnica works.”

“What in the hell is going on here?” Jane said, regaining control of her domain.

“Are you going to offer me a seat?”

Jane searched valiantly for words to match her confused thinking. “We talk outside the meeting and&#8230what? What is this?”

“I guess I’ll offer myself a seat,” Kit replied, pulling the chair away from the desk and plopping her round frame into the cushion.

“Wait just a goddamned minute!” Jane said, coming to her senses.

“Sit down and I’ll explain everything to you,” Kit replied succinctly as she removed a series of envelopes and folders from her satchel.

A bolt of anger erupted inside of Jane. “No! I will explain it to you! You don’t follow me from a bar to my private turf outside an AA meeting and talk to me as if you’re one of us and then just waltz in here! That was sacred territory last night!”

“I understand and respect that,” Kit said in earnest.

“The fuck you do!” Jane yelled, feeling terribly exposed and vulnerable.

“Hell, I don’t care if you’re a recovering alcoholic! That doesn’t make you less of a person in my eyes. Frankly, it makes you more human. If you were all bravado and no vulnerability, then you couldn’t work from your heart, and I know you work from your heart. Last night, it was imperative for me to look into your eyes and really see you.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You do the same thing with others before you agree to form a relationship.”

“Excuse me?” Jane said, in a semimocking tone.

“You did it with me last night! You looked into my center. You felt who I was.”

“Jesus&#8230.”

“Let’s not play games, Jane P. Time is of the essence, and I don’t have any desire to fill that time with bullshit.”

“Get out!” Jane ordered Kit, pointing toward the door.

Kit dug her backside into the chair and flipped her long, salt-and-pepper braid over her shoulder in a defiant thrust. “No! I’m not leaving until you hear my petition.”

“If you don’t move your ass out of that chair&#8212”

“What are you going to do, Jane P.? Take a pool cue and knock me across the forehead?” Kit let that statement sink into Jane’s ears.

Jane was dumbstruck. Kit had somehow witnessed the fiasco at The Red Tail the previous night. Grabbing a small digital clock, Jane slammed it on the desk. “Five minutes and then you’re out of here!” Jane sat down.

“Do you believe in fate?”

“Do I believe in fate?” Jane repeated with a wicked edge.

“Yes or no, Jane P.”

“You just chewed up twenty seconds of your time with a dumb question.”

“Oh, you’re going to play tough with me?”

Jane tapped the back of the digital clock. “Four and a half minutes, Kit.”

Kit angrily slapped the clock off Jane’s desk, sending it against the wall. “Scratch the badass cop act! That’s not who you really are!”

“You don’t know who the fuck I am!”

Kit sat forward. “Yes, I do! I followed the Emily Lawrence story very closely this past summer,” she said, referring to the high-profile homicide case that had propelled Jane’s name into the public eye. “I was fascinated by the case and the way you so deftly solved it. When I found out you were going to be on Larry King Live, I taped the show.”

“What are you, a detective groupie?”

“Far from it. I’m deeply interested in any story that deals with a child and a murder. I saw you on Larry King’s show. I looked into your eyes and I saw a kindred spirit. You can stiffen your back and say ‘fuck you’ until the cows come home. I know it’s all a comfortable front to hide your pain and disarm stupid people so they don’t see how sensitive you really are.” Jane cringed at Kit’s backhanded compliment. Having her vulnerability exposed skewed her normal leveraging capabilities. “I don’t want you to think I’m sucking up to you, because I don’t suck up to anyone. Now, I do need to get to the point of my visit. It’s a matter of life and death and time is running out.”

Jane didn’t know what to make of Kit’s disturbing appeal. “Life and death?”

“I assume you’re aware of the breaking national news story of the moment?”

“What?”

Kit removed the Denver Post from her satchel and slid it toward Jane. “Charlotte Walker, age twelve, kidnapped from her hometown in Oakhurst, California.”

Jane stared at the photo of the hazel-eyed child. “What about it?”

“I think I know who has her,” Kit replied in a shaky voice.

    Don't even try to put it down!

    WOW! Honestly, I wasn't sure I'd like this book. I mean I loved the trailer but then after reading the first couple of chapters I put it down and walked away afraid it would go on the dnf stack. But I just couldn't get the characters out of my head. I wanted, no, needed, to know what happened and where Charlotte was. I try not to get so wrapped up in books but I just couldn't help it. I could not put it down.

    I loved the way the story was able to call out the judgmental and the sacrificial without proclaiming that all were bad. I loved that I could feel the heartache Jane's abusive nature -- the alcoholism, the sarcasm -- had on others while still feeling the hurt that caused her to lash out. This was an impressive start from a new to me author. 'Redemption' is the second book in the series but I didn't feel at all like I missed something by not reading the first.

    I really disliked the language -- there was quite a bit but it was used contextually.

    Love these Jane Perry books!

    I read the first Jane Perry book and thought it was great, so I got the second one (and the third). I had read a couple of the reviews about this one from people who weren't happy with the way it was written....something about mispelling words, which really does bug me too, but decided to get it anyway. Guess what, the characters were so interesting and the story grabbed me in such a way that I didn't notice any mispelled words. I just couldn't stop reading! I do hope there are a lot more Jane Perry stories in the future.

    Getting better

    Great characters, great story. I love a protagonist with flaws and internal issues, and Jane has plenty of them. The author clearly understands the options as well as the obstacles for people with addiction problems. Lots of good descriptions of locales. I might have even given five stars, but Laurel Dewey's work is still suffering from poor editing. Not as many typos in the ebook version as Protector, the first in this series, but plenty of grammatical and spelling errors: track house, one in the same, bearing her soul. The author deserves better because she has great story ideas and a really sympathetic and engaging protagonist.

    I hope there's more Jane Perry on the way!

    Dewey has a good writing style (although I'd like to see her stop changing points-of-view in the same paragraph/scene) and it got better with this book. Her character Jane Perry is well-developed, and the secondary characters are interesting. In this book, we already know whodunit, but the story is about how Jane goes about proving the bad guy is the bad guy. While Jane is one of the more flawed characters you'll find in crime fiction, she's quite believable. Hope Dewey has more Jane Perry books in the works!

    highly recommend

    This is the second in a series and I have enjoy them both. Very well written and the characters are very real. I want to smack Jane and then just hug her. You can feel her emotions so strongly.
    Definitely worth the time to read it.

    Redemption

    Katherine "Kit" Clark is convinced that the Lou Peters, the man who raped and murdered her granddaughter Ashlee is at it again. When reasonable doubt was proven in the case of Ashlee,Lou is granted a new trial and he was ordered out of prison on bond. Now there is another missing girl and Kit is convinced Lou is the one to blame.
    Jane Perry quit the police force to become a private investigator, and things haven't been going so well. While attending an AA meeting she decides to step out for a smoke and meets Kit Clark a sixty eight year old woman who acts well, a bit odd. Kit shows up the next day at Jane's office explaining her granddaughters murder, and how she feels that Lou has abducted the twelve year old girl that is in the headlines. She hires Jane to figure it out, and wants Jane to get it accomplished in ten days or less. Will Jane be able to solve the case?
    This book had me hooked from the beginning. Jane is a very tough character who likes to smoke and used to drink, because of her past and the demons that haunt her I felt like these habits actually made her seem more realistic.Kit is someone that reminds me of a sixties free spirited hippie, while she has led a very colorful life she blames herself for Ashlee's murder, and the sad thing is so does her daughter. She is now dying of cancer and believes that the cancer was a product of the hate that festered inside her.
    After I started reading this book I realized that there was another book titled "Protector" that introduces us to Jane, but the author does a fantastic job of giving us enough background information that you can easily read "Redemption" as a stand alone work.
    Jane Perry is a character that I look forward to reading more of, it will be quite interesting to see how the author continues to develop her.
    If your looking for a fast paced thriller filled with mystery and suspense then you need to read "Redemption."

    Loved it!! (and I'm not usually into detective books)

    I loved both books in the Jane Perry series. I couldn't put them down and read them back to back. I can't wait until the next in the series.

    Excellent Read

    I think I have read all of this series of books about "Jane P." Every one has been very enjoyable. It is a help to read the very first one first, but not really necessary. Hope there will be more, for I will read every one.

    Excellent!

    Just finished reading this...sniff...and i say Bravo!!! Love this author and this series. Buy it. She could get way more for her books, but I am glad they are still affordable! She is as good as Dean Koontz to me and that says a lot. Really takes you into the characters, and makes them more real. Know what I mean?

    Redemption

    Jane Perry quit the police force and is now working as a private detective. But she has to deal with her personal demons which have led her to drink. Outside an AA meeting she meets Kit Clark who is convinced that a man named Lou Peters killed her grandchild and may be involved in the disappearance of another child. Off to California from Denver, Jane has to deal with a crazy cast of characters and a much more in hopes of located and saving this missing girl. This is the second Jane Perry novel in a series and although I have not tread the first (Protector), this one hold its own as it is a suspenseful and character driven story that leads to a powerful climax.

    LAUREL DEWEY has written another winner!

    Laurel Dewey writes books that stay with the reader long after the last page is turned. I still find myself thinking about passages in this latest book and things the characters went through. Her main character, Jane Perry, is tough as nails but really vulnerable if you scratch that hard exterior. In REDEMPTION, Jane is hired by a old Bohemian hippie woman named Kit to track down a guy who she believes is responsible for the kidnapping of a 12-year-old California girl. Together, they drive to Northern California and the town of Oakhurst as the clock is running to save the child. But the story is much more than a page-turning crime thriller. It's also a thought provoking, deeply moving story about addiction, regret, faith, religion and coming to terms with what you THINK is true vs. what is really true. This book captivated me from the first few chapters and I was sucked in as if I was living the story with the characters. There's something I cannot explain about Laurel Dewey's writing. It's both emotionally unsettling and riveting at the same time. I, for one, simply do not forget these books and I cannot wait until the third Jane Perry novel comes out!

    Dewey hits another home run

    Denver Homicide cop Jane Perry has resigned, unable to put behind her the loss of a family she was protecting. She has decided to start her own detective agency and is wallowing in self-pity when fate throws her a bone. While stepping out for a smoke at her AA meeting, Jane meets Katherine "Kit" Clark, who is fighting demons of her own. She lost her granddaughter Ashlee to a brutal rapist and murderer and now, due to new evidence, he has been granted a new trial. Now a new abduction has taken place and Kit is convinced it's the same person who killed Ashlee and wants to hire Jane to find him. Desperate for money, Jane takes the case, not knowing what a strange ride it's going to be. Kit is a New Ager and all her herbs and homeopathic cures almost drive Jane over the edge; Jane's foul language and smoking habit are repulsive to Kit. In the end both women realize that they can help one another find what until now has been desperately out of reach: redemption.

    "Redemption" by Laurel Dewey features the return of Jane Perry, Denver Homicide detective. It is the second entry in what I hope will be a long running series. The book focuses on the search for redemption by two women: one, a recent resigned Homicide detective and the other, a woman with a terminal illness. My favorite part of the book was the discussion between Jane and Kit concerning the beliefs of Dr. John Bartosh, psychologist turned Fundamentalist minister and the man who lobbied for the release of Kit's granddaughter's killer. There is much of what was said that I can personally relate to, having grown up with family members with these very same beliefs. Like in the book, their personal identity cannot be separated from their religion: to question one is to question the other. The author has done an excellent job of giving her characters a depth that is often missing from the typical murder mystery. I love the way that the author has brought these two individuals together to work toward a common goal.

    Laurel Dewey has definitely earned a place in any discussion of the top mystery authors of the present day, including such stand-outs as Michael Connelly, Jeffery Deaver and Faye Kellerman, among others. If you enjoy authors such as these, don't miss "Redemption." This is a five-star read.

    Quit at Chapter 30

    After wading through 29 chapters of implausible dialog I finally quit trying. the only character that held my interest was Kit and that simply wasn't enough to keep in reading to the end.

    Good Read

    This is a good story, but there is less action than the 1st book. A lot of investigating, which is important. Would like a bit more action. A good read from the beginning. Honestly, I skipped over a few places that were a bit repetitive. Recommend this for most ages, nix young children.
