From the Publisher

For Lent, I chose to give up time consuming Facebook games in order to spend more time on spiritual reading and prayer. I was glad to have Rediscover Lent in my 'to-be-read' basket ready and waiting for my use.

Rediscover Lent grabbed me from the Introduction; Kelly let the reader know that this Lenten devotional would be about the seven pillars of Catholic spirituality - exactly what I needed for Lent. The seven pillars are Confession, daily prayer, the Mass, the Bible, fasting, spiritual reading and the Rosary. Definitely serious stuff for serious consideration but presented in a non-threatening manner.

Each day starts with the Readings for daily Mass although you will need to take out your Bible or as I did have them delivered to your email box each morning. The Sunday Readings are listed for all three cycles. There is then a page or two of reflection, followed by questions on which to meditate and a prayer.

Upon flipping through the book, I discovered in the Notes section that the reflections in Rediscover Lent were taken from Rediscover Catholicism by Kelly. I recently received a copy of that title and plan to read it during the Easter season to expand on what I "discover" during Lent. —SAGA

Using excerpts from his New York Times bestselling book Rediscover Catholicism, Franciscan Media has put together a wonderful book that starts on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Easter Sunday. Each day includes a Scripture passage and a reflection on the Catholic faith, questions for meditation, and a short prayer. This could take as little as five minutes of your day but impact it with the seeds it could plant into your soul. Guaranteed to make you think and reconsider your approach to Lent while inspiring you to embrace your faith more. —CatholicMom.com

    Lenten gift

In Rediscover Lent, Matthew Kelly has set three main goals: to raise morale among Catholics, to explore the genius in Catholicism, and to engage disengaged Catholics in a special way. Our spiritual heritage is rich in wisdom and practice, he writes. "If we can embrace this heritage and adapt it to the modern context, we will begin again to thrive as the spiritual people God intended us to be—both individually and as a Church."

Kelly, an internationally known speaker and author of more than a dozen books, organizes Rediscover Lent around seven pillars of Catholic spirituality:
    Confession
    Daily prayer
    The Mass
    The bible
    Fasting
    Spiritual reading
    The rosary

He describes these pillars as "anchors of our faith that combine two thousand years of spiritual wisdom into a handful of spiritual exercises." The daily format consists of Scripture citations, a quotation from one passage, reflection, meditation, and prayer.

For example, the material for the second week of Lent focuses on daily prayer. Throughout the week we learn that Kelly began a serious habit of prayer nearly 20 years ago. His life changed when he began to pray for 10 minutes a day. And he prays for three reasons: to make sense of things, to live deeply and deliberately, and "to build up the kind of inner density required to prevent the culture from swallowing me up."

The title for Friday of the second week of Lent is Make Time to Pray. In the reflection Kelly suggests that others also begin by praying 10 minutes each day and increase the time gradually. He advocates keeping a record of time spent in prayer on a daily basis, a practice that he follows, making notes on paper throughout the day and tallying up the time at the end of each week. Discovering how little time he was spending in prayer led him to focus on and expand his prayer life.

Sample meditations from the second week of Lent include asking readers to consider making some changes so that prayer can become a regular part of our lives and spending at least 10 minutes this day to "listen to what God is saying to you, right here, right now."

In Rediscover Lent Matthew Kelly offers a practical, inspiring gift for individuals and groups.
