I am at present an undergraduate student of Geography. During this period of study I have also taken courses in American history. At the moment I am taking a course entitled, 'Geography of North America' at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO). Along with whatever textbook to use for guidance, this book by Barry Lopez would be a perfect companion piece. Mr. Lopez offers us far more than a philosophy of place I would term it a 'spirituality of place' in the written tradition of writers like Pierre de Chardin and Thomas Berry. While brief it is beautifully and artistically written with an amazing impact on this reader. It encourages me to relate to the land in an intimate manner, and to treasure my places as if they were fellow humans. Thank you, Barry Lopez, for the gift of your words and insights.
