Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The focus of the titles in the "Green Team" series is to conserve natural resources and to minimize waste of every type. The problem of litter and too much garbage is clearly presented in the text and the excellent, full color illustrations that accompany it. Each section offers challenges to readers, asking them to help solve a problem. There are calls to action and descriptions of projects from around the world. Young readers are encouraged to find creative ways to get rid of clothing that is too small or worn out and toys that are no longer used, and to look for ways to recycle and use recycled paper. Hewitt desribes case studies such as "Read to Grow" and "Book Need." For example, books can be collected and sent to another school, often in a lesser developed country. A charity called "Friends of Malawi Orphans" provides children with clothing collected in the United Kingdom. Kids are encouraged to recycle cell phones and computers as well as old machines, although that is only something a student could suggest to the parents. There is an exercise to make paper and a challenge to use less and recycle what is used. Teachers, students, parents, and home-schoolers will find good ideas throughout the text and have fun with the major activity presented at the end of the book. For this particular title, the exercise encourages readers to get companies to use less or better packaging. Each book closes with a glossary, a list of approximately six appropriate websites, and an index. This is a well-written and informative series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
