    Just Great ( 3rd Edition )

Having come home from Maui having snorkeled quite a bit there, I decided I would like to see what the Caribbean has to offer in terms of reef fish. My first step? Get the best fish ID book I could find that covered this area. That book it seems is Reef Fish Identification, by Paul Humann and Ned Deloach. I'm really quite amazed at how many photos there are in this book, and the quality of them. Pretty much 100% of the photos are clear and bright with the fish being shown at its best angle for identification. Quite often there are several pictures of 1 fish, showing the different phases. To help you along, there are black and white diagrams of each fish noting the distinguishing features of each fish. This book is also well organized, making it rather easy to find what you're looking for. The information on each fish is brief but well done. I especially like the 'Habitat and Behaviour' info, and the 'Reaction to Divers' information is a strong plus for me. The book itself is 6 inches by 9, and is rather heavy. I'm a bit concerned about lugging this book around in my backpack along with other supplies like water and my gear. This 3rd edition is apparently 20% bigger than the last, which would explain the extra weight. A nice plus is the plastic covering that will offer up some good protection. The binding has changed from the second edition. This 3rd edition binding is now 'cloth-stitched flexi-binding', which is supposed to be quite durable and allow you to set this book flat. I'm not too confident in setting it flat though. I'm still nervous about breaking the back, especially due to the weight of this book. I suppose the coiled editions of the past were perhaps losing pages, so they adopted this binding instead. I think I would have preferred a coiled binding though. All in all, this is a great book. No diver or snorkeler should be without it. My only problems with it might be the weight as well as the binding. I might actually have prefered the second edition for these reasons.

    we love this book!

we just returned from a trip to Mexico where we snorkeled off the beach everyday. After each round, we identified the fish in the book and marked each page with the date & place we saw that species. Because the books is divided into easy to read 'types' of fish, it made it easy to find each fish. That book was one of the best purchases I have ever made & I am going to buy the other volumes on 'creatures'

A must for anyone serious about Reef Fish ID

I have been diving since 1994 and began photographing underwater since shortly after that. This book has been my bible for reef fish identification. Thanks to Humann and Deloach, I am able to know what to look for and to find the details that lead to more accurate identification. I don't know how anyone serious about Reef Fish ID could do without this book.

    Comprehensive and well organized.

Just completed several dives in Turks and Caicos. Saw some very unusual fish and was able to locate/identify them easily. Found pictures of different stages of development also helpful. Book is larger/heavier than expected which is good for being comprehensive but less than ideal for carrying on trip.

Needs to be 5 times as thick.

ok book, covers a few fishes from each 'type', by no means complete. Not a bad start for a diver new to the area. Not for advanced aquarists, or tropical fish collectors.
