Overview

A worthwhile date movie, according to Halpern, meets three criteria: it appeals to women and men, it contains a plausible romance, and it leaves the audience with a romantic feeling. Reel Romance provides detailed information on 100 such films, focusing on movies from the last 25 years but including some classics from Hollywood's golden era (could any book on romantic films leave out Casablanca?) Organizing the movies according to ten themes, Halpern adds some surprises to the mix: along with expected comedies and love stories, the list includes fantasy films (Ladyhawke, Dreamscape), detective movies (Fletch), animated pictures (Shrek), and even a little kung-fu (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). Each film description includes a rating on the "makeout meter," suggestions for further viewing, and the "do try this at home" tips for couples eager to add a little movie magic to their own romances. Halpern also advises viewers on which films go best with different periods in the relationship, ranging from first date to comfortably married. With Americans spending more of their movie-watching time at home, and couples forever wandering through the video stores looking for something that they'll both enjoy, Reel Romance arrives at the perfect time.

Editorial Reviews

Columbia Missourian
This book will help kindle a spark among daters as they cuddle in front of a romantic movie.
From the Publisher
I love this book! Reel Romance is a must for movielovers in love. There isn't another book quite like this for couples: fun to read, thought-provoking, and filled with great suggestions for cozy nights together. It will occupy a prominent place in my library of film books.

Louisville Courier-Journal - Judith Egerton
The soft-cover guide isn't a compilation of so-called "chick flicks." It includes gross-out comedies by the Farrelly Brothers, silly movies, suspense, and action adventure pictures.
Bucks County Courier Times - Betty Cichy
So what are the chances a couple can find a movie that will leave both smiling in pleasure and anticipation as the credits roll? Pretty good, especially if they take "Reel Romance" along with them to the video store.
The Times Online - Sean Macaulay
...a lighthearted work.
Publishers Weekly
Those who manage to score a date-but who are clueless when it comes to picking out the perfect date movie-should snag this film reference from Halpern, a reviewer for the Orlando Sentinel and the Hollywood Reporter (among others). Organized by theme (Love in Disguise, Love Is a Supernatural Thing, etc.), this book covers everything from classics like Some Like It Hot to modern productions like Notting Hill, and each ends with a humorous Do Try This at Home tip. If Casablanca is your favorite movie, for example, Halpern suggests you "establish 'our toast' early and say it often." The movie summaries are uninspired and light on analysis, but this book contains enough basic information-and even a "Make Out Meter," measured in candles-to aid lovers in their quest for the perfect romantic movie.
