All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
In 1995, Arista released the first multi-label Carly Simon retrospective, the triple-disc box set Clouds in My Coffee, and seven years later, Rhino delivered the second, the double-disc Anthology. Two years after that, Arista finally delivered the first single-disc multi-label retrospective, Reflections: Carly Simon's Greatest Hits. Spanning nearly 30 years and featuring 20 songs, the collection has all of the big hits, from such '70s standards as "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be," "Anticipation," "The Right Thing to Do," "You're So Vain," "Haven't Got Time for the Pain," and "Nobody Does it Better" to the late-'80s comeback hit "Let the River ...

Spanning nearly 30 years and featuring 20 songs, the collection has all of the big hits, from such '70s standards as "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be," "Anticipation," "The Right Thing to Do," "You're So Vain," "Haven't Got Time for the Pain," and "Nobody Does it Better" to the late-'80s comeback hit "Let the River Run." Certainly, there are some listeners who are looking for a concise career-spanning disc, and for them, this suits the bill very well. The problem is, Simon's late-'80s and '90s work isn't as strong as her '70s recordings, and it accounts for half of this disc; Anthology had a similar situation, with the classic period ending at the conclusion of the first disc, but that division worked better, since it left the listener with one solid disc of '70s material. Here, the two eras are contained on one disc, so the dip in quality is more noticeable, which may make this of less interest to those who only want Simon's best work. Even so, Reflections does what it sets out to do quite well, providing a single-disc overview of Simon's entire career, both for better and worse.

    Nobody Does It Better

I of course went out and bought this cd right away because i love Carly's work so much. This Album is not as good as the multi disc collections of Carly's work, but it is still very good. Die hard fans will do better with the anthology or clouds in my coffee Box sets. But those who have been casual fans, or just know a few songs will soon become die hard fans after hearing this entire album.(Unlike the Proffesional reviewer). The album contains songs that will bring you to tears, bring joy to your life, and some will even make you get up and dance and sing. From a huge carly fan here this cd is great. It still does neglect the Playing Possum albums work, but nothing is ever perfect. A Great Album, from Carly Simon. its true Nobody Does It Better.

    Essentials from an icon......

The AMG reviewer clearly did not really listen to the later work on this disc. If he truly had, he would have heard an artist who has truly improved with time. Reflections: Carly Simon's Greatest Hits is the first single disc collection to give a full-bodied overview of Simon's career. For those looking for one collection to get all the big hits then here it is. You won't be disappointed. Furthermore, the tracks you don't know will make you want to investigate further. For the fans, there's a previously unavailable version of Amity, which is worth the price alone. If that weren't enough, there are rare single mixes of classics as we remember them from the radio. All in all, there is something for everyone here. Carly Simon is one of the most gifted song writers the world has known. Just listen to these if you need proof.
