Regents of the University of California V. Bakke: American Education and Affirmative Action

Overview

Although the United States was built on the notion of equality for all, discrimination has, unfortunately, been a consistent part of American history. In the 1960s, some businesses and universities, as well as the federal government, created a concept intended to right some of the wrongs of the past. Affirmative action provided a framework that favored individuals from groups that had historically been discriminated against.

In the early 1970s, a 32-year-old white aerospace engineer named Allan Bakke applied to a California medical school and was subsequently rejected. Believing he had lost an opportunity because of the medical school's affirmative action program, Bakke sued, convinced his own civil rights had been denied. His case would one day reach the halls of the United States Supreme Court, and the future of affirmative action in America would never be the same.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amanda MacGregor
When Allan Bakke applied to medical school is the early 1970s, he had no idea that this move would lead him to instigate a major court case that would question what place affirmative action and quotas have in America. Part of the twelve-book "Great Supreme Court Decisions" series, the groundwork for this case begins in 1973 when thirty-three-year-old Caucasian Bakke was rejected from the University of California, Davis, among other places, and felt he would have been accepted had it not been for spaces set aside in the incoming class for minority students. Bakke felt these students were not held to the same admission standards as Caucasian students and perceived himself as a victim of racial discrimination. He sued UC, Davis, and found his case pushed further along the system until finally reaching the Supreme Court in 1975. Bakke's controversial case would affect affirmative action programs across the United States. The scope of this volume is grand, looking not only at Bakke's case, but giving a greater context by providing a historical overview of discrimination in America. Readers with a very specific interest in this case or the judicial system will find this useful for research. A chronology, notes for sources of quotes, a glossary, bibliography, further reading suggestions, and an index are included. Both color and black-and-white photographs appear throughout but generally do not add much to the text. Reviewer: Amanda MacGregor
