Overview

Reggae powerhouse VP Records has been bringing the biggest hits straight from yard for over two decades, and the label's yearly best-of compilations can be counted on to sum up the state of reggae. Volume eight, REGGAE GOLD 2000, is no different, delivering 18 solid cuts of dancehall, roots, and lover's rock that include some of the biggest hits of the year to date. Some of these jams are so fresh you can smell the vinyl: Capleton's grimy "Good in Her Clothes" and Bounty Killer's banned-in-Jamaica single "Look" are current radio hits. But on to the talent. The biggest success story in recent reggae has been Sean Paul, a smooth-domed DJ whose STAGE ONE has been climbing the charts since its March 2000 release; he appears with Mr. Vegas on a remixed version of his breakout hit "Hot Gal Today." On the crooner's side, there's the ladies' favorite, Sanchez, pleading his way through Brian McKnight's R&B hit "Back at One," and veteran Beres Hammond offering the Teddy Pendergrass-style "They Gonna Talk." Roots-and-culture sibling group Morgan Heritage represent for Rastafari on "Down by the River" and "Psalms 23," where Denroy Morgan's musical brood back up Buju Banton. If this already sounds like a party disc to you, VP does one better and includes a limited-edition DJ mix CD by the Adonai sound system of all the REGGAE GOLD 2000 tracks.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Rosalind Cummings-Yeates
As expected, the Reggae Gold series continued its annual collection of some of each year's most crucial tunes, and 2000 proved to be especially hard-hitting. Opening with Bounty Killer's powerful toasting on "Look," the tone is set for fast-paced riddims and booming-voiced DJs, with Bounty, Capleton, and Lexxus appearing on the first three tunes. Indeed, caustic and gruff DJ performances fill the majority of the CD, from Madd Anju's humorous "Nuh Play Chess" and Baby Cham's "War Forever" to Professor Nutts' catchy "Magnet." For those who need some respite from dancehall's rough beats, there's an excellent offering of smooth lovers rock, from Beres Hammond's soothing "They Gonna Talk" to Sanchez' masterful remake of Brian McKnight's "Back to One." This is truly an all-inclusive greatest-hits package.
