Overview

Reggae is and has always been a man's world, but although she was never quite as well known as superstar producers like Duke Reid, Coxsone Dodd, and the infamous Lee Perry, Sonia Pottinger is responsible for some of the finest rocksteady and reggae recordings to come from Jamaica during the early '70s. The revolving stable of talent at her High-Tone label included, at various times, such top-flight performers as Ken Boothe, Culture, Marcia Griffiths, and Justin Hinds & the Dominoes, but her secret weapon was engineer Errol Brown, who helped pioneer the use of eight-track recording techniques in the Jamaican studios and learned quickly how to put that technology to maximum use. This collection starts out with an extra-long mix of Culture's reggae adaptation of "This Train Is Bound for Glory," which sets a high standard for the rest of the album. The other artists rarely, if ever, fail to reach that standard: Marcia Griffith's "Dreamland" is a pure classic, and is followed by a Bojangles deejay version that almost does justice to the original. The Chantells' "How Can I Get Over" is so poignantly lovely that the listener is left amazed that that band didn't have greater success, and frustrated that there isn't a more extensive record of their work. Delroy Denton's "Sufferer's Choice" is another classic, this one in the "woe-is-me" tradition that was so popular at the time. The sound is excellent, and there are really no duds on the whole album.
