Description: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the foundation, practices, and current issues in the rehabilitation counseling profession. This is a valuable resource for people entering the field as well as for practitioners who have been working as rehabilitation counselors. Substantial updates and major changes in the rehabilitation counseling field have occurred since the 1998 edition of this book, necessitating this new edition.
Purpose: According to the authors, the purpose is to provide both a basic foundation for students entering the field and a broad-based reference for current practitioners. The book provides a conceptual overview of the profession, history, theory, research, and applied rehabilitation counseling practices. As a practitioner in the field for over 25 years and a person who supervises new rehabilitation counselors, I found this book a valuable and well organized resource. The authors have certainly met their objectives by providing this up-to-date and comprehensive look at the rehabilitation counseling profession.
Audience: The targeted audience is students and practitioners in the rehabilitation counseling profession. The authors are well respected in the rehabilitation counseling field and they have brought together their extensive expertise and succeeded in developing a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the field.
Features: This book covers the history, counseling theories, and contemporary rehabilitation counseling applications in a very comprehensive manner. One of the most valuable aspects of this book is that it compiles the most current information regarding rehabilitation counseling practices. Examples include the impact of the consumer movement and technology on how rehabilitation counselors perform their jobs. The book is well organized and easy to read. The tables, figures, and appendixes assist readers in quickly finding and learn a great deal of material.
Assessment: This is a high quality book offering a solid overview of the rehabilitation counseling field. For students, it provides a good introduction to the profession. For experienced rehabilitation counselors, much of the book may be review, but the information is comprehensive, organized, and up-to-date. This book enables the busy professional to find needed information quickly and efficiently. The fourth edition is justified since it covers the major changes that have occurred in the field since the 1998 edition. George Wright's Total Rehabilitation provided an overview of the field in 1980. However, the profession has changed with the passage of time and new books were developed to provide an updated overview, such as Rubin and Roessler's Foundations of the Vocational Rehabilitation Process, 5th edition (Pro-Ed, 2000). This book covers many of the same topics, but expands on the contemporary applications of counseling and job placement services.
