Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Samuel J. Chmell, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: At two volumes of nearly 1,000 pages each, this is the definitive and most complete treatise on rehabilitation of the hand and upper extremity. The previous edition was published in 2002.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide up-to-date information correlating hand and upper extremity therapy with surgery through the "synergy" of a group of truly expert editors and authors. This book is the bible of all aspects of hand rehabilitation.
Audience: It is intended for physicians, surgeons, fellows, residents, and therapists who are involved with the care of patients with hand and upper extremity injuries, surgery, and rehabilitation. The authors are indeed credible authorities in the areas they have written.
Features: The book covers the various conditions affecting the hand and upper extremity, including trauma, arthritis, and pain syndromes, that more often than not require formal therapy and rehabilitation to have a satisfactory outcome. It first describes the anatomy and physiology, then it details in depth the therapy measures to be instituted. The book includes access to a phenomenal online video collection.
Assessment: This is an essential for the library of therapists and surgeons treating the hand and the upper extremity. It stands alone in its field. Each edition keeps getting better.
From the Publisher
"The fifth edition of Rehabilitation of the Hand and Upper Extremity has something for everyone. Therapists likely will find this book an indispensable reference source that will guide and inform them in treating problems from the shoulder to the fingertip. Residents and fellows who have an interest in upper-extremity conditions will find that many of the chapters in this book fall into the "must-read" category. Even seasoned practitioners will find new and useful information concerning common clinical problems as well as clearly written and thorough reviews of topics not otherwise readily available." - Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, review of 5th edition.
