Sexuality in Turn of the Century Vienna

This play is fascinatingly constructed with subtle, nuanced language and gesture. Very revealing of the sexual mores and double standards of turn of the century Vienna, Schnitzler offers a probing and in depth snapshot of the power of the sexual act as a means to reconfigure gender, stay the passage of time, and resist the dissolution of a once powerful culture. By using stock characters Schnitzler is able to examine society from an economic standpoint as well. The notion that sexual values was somehow connected with one's economic standing is undercut through this play. Schnitzler trenchantly observes the sexual and social values of this time period.
