Overview

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe psychological disorder in which individuals have difficulties with impulsivity, affect, identity, and interpersonal relationships. Interest in BPD has grown as the healthcare industry has come to recognize that these individuals require a disproportionate amount of time and medical expense due to high frequencies of self-harming behaviors and suicide attempts. Despite increased attention, little empirical data exists that examines the extent and correlates of interpersonal dysfunction in BPD. The present study aimed to address this gap in the literature by focusing on how interpersonal functioning is related to the other core characteristics of BPD. Based on the limited prior research, it was hypothesized that high BPD characteristics would predict interpersonal difficulties. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that indirect aggression would stem from BPD characteristics and be a proximal cause (mediator) of interpersonal problems. The study also included measurement and control for frequently comorbid psychological disorders which are often not assessed in research on BPD, and therefore may confound prior results. To examine these hypotheses, 98 undergraduate women were recruited such that the sample included women with none, some, or many of the BPD core characteristics. Participants completed both cross-sectional and prospective (weekly diary) questionnaires assessing BPD symptoms and components, and an interview-rated measure assessing interpersonal stress. Results showed that of the three non-interpersonal core components of BPD, identity disturbance emerged as the most clearly related to interpersonal dysfunction. This relationship was the strongest among family of origin relationships. Indirect aggression was related to BPD symptoms and components; however, mediation was not demonstrated. Evidence was found for an alternative mediation model in which BPD symptoms predicted daily negative interpersonal events, which in turn predicted indirect aggression a week later. The results of the present study add to our understanding of the causes and consequences of interpersonal dysfunction in BPD. The findings were integrated with prior research on the heritability of impulsivity and affective problems, family of origin relationships, and the nature of self-harm in BPD. Limitations are discussed and directions for future research are proposed.
