Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Welsh
Nick is a master at coming up with excuses when it is time to run the mile during gym class. In fact, Nick has managed to dodge the bullet so many times that he believes he is home free. Unfortunately, his gym teacher, Mr. Swanson, has caught on to Nick's plan. Mr. Swanson gives Nick a choice: Join the relay race team, or run the mile. Even though it is still running, Nick decides a relay race would be far less painful than running a mile. Little does Nick know that he now has to practice every day for the next month with the track team. The first practice does not go so well for Nick. He cannot run as fast as the others, he drops the baton several times in a row, and he feels like he has been hit by an eighteen wheeler by the end. Nick cannot imagine living in this misery for the next thirty days, so he fakes an injury. His coach seems to buy Nick's excuse, but will Nick be able to keep up the ruse forever? What will happen if his family and teammates find out he has been lying? Large font, large illustrations, and short chapters will appeal to reluctant readers. It would also be a good book to use to talk about honesty and perseverance in the face of obstacles. Reviewer: Heather Welsh
