Overview

During a Republican primary debate leading up to his 2000 nomination, George W. Bush famously identified Jesus Christ as his favorite philosopher. His ability to speak to the concerns of a politically active religious base earned him a massive portion of evangelical votes and signaled the continued prominence of religion in American political discourse.

Religion and American Politics provides essential background for this recent history. It offers a comprehensive overview of the interaction between religion and politics in America, from the colonial period to our own times. This book shows that the intertwining of religion and politics in the last few decades is nothing new. For instance, religious vitriol was spread around more widely during the Jefferson-Adams presidential race of 1800 than in the Bush-Kerry contest in 2004; and the public debate over the morality of slavery reached a depth and intensity beyond what has been seen more recently in debates over abortion or same-sex marriage.

Substantially updated and expanded, this second edition retains the core materials of the first and adds eight new chapters on the current state of American religion and politics. The book benefits from an interdisciplinary approach-the authors include leading historians as well as sociologists, political scientists, and observers from outside the United States. Diverse in their methodologies and themes, these essays provide the definitive overview of religion's role in American politics.
