Storey and Utter (history and political science, respectively, Lamar Univ.; The Religious Right: A Reference Handbook. 2d ed.) here aim to show ways that religion and politics can intersect. Though the subjects range from Gandhi to Pat Robertson, the authors make their points by focusing on three representative situations: the separation between church and state in the United States, state regulation of religion in Iran, and control of religion in China. The text is divided into seven sections "Introduction," "Chronology," "Biographical Sketches," "Data and Quotations," "Directory of Organizations," "Print Resources," and "Nonprint Resources" with the United States, China, and Iran dominating the introduction as well as the biographical entries and the long bibliographies of print and nonprint resources. Though the chronology begins in 1750 B.C.E., the book's emphasis is on the 20th century and especially the last 30 years; entries on recent events are longer. As a handbook made up mostly of lists, this book is inevitably narrow. The introduction provides the only real analysis of issues, especially as they pertain to the three areas on which the authors chose to concentrate, and readers will have to look elsewhere for thought-provoking argument and in-depth information.
